The weather men in OK are always over estimating the size of hail.?ÿ They say half-dollar and I see dimes.?ÿ Tonight they said baseball and by gawd thirty seconds later it hit.?ÿ I chanced a peek out of a window and by golly they got this one right...baseballs...with a recorded 80 mph wind at the AP, a half mile away.?ÿ Tore the piss out of everything.?ÿ A local intersection not far from here had the traffic light assembly torn off and blown through the front of a parked car.
I Lost all the windows in my house on the north and west about an hour ago.?ÿ Lost some glass in my new Jeep Cherokee too.?ÿ I probably need a new roof too.?ÿ I've already left a message on my insurance agent's phone.?ÿ Guess me and him will get to know each other a little better after all this.
Time to abuse some diazepam and get some sleep for tomorrow.?ÿ What a world, eh?
?ÿ
DAMN IT PADEN!
Hate to hear this. The very best of luck to you and yours.
Give me a good ol' 6.5 earthquake any day. Those of you that deal with tornados and stupid sized hail have my complete sympathy and best wishes.
JA, PLS, SoCal
I learned from some fellows at a meeting tonight that the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma got hit with serious rain this morning.?ÿ Six inches fell in less than 30 minutes.?ÿ To the northeast, in Missouri, Roaring River State Park displayed why it was so-named.
Yes, Paden, you and a ton of others are going to have meetings with insurance adjusters real soon.?ÿ Two summers ago something similar happened 10 miles from me.?ÿ Virtually every house, business and other insured buildings plus every kind of vehicle sustained serious damage.?ÿ Our Green (LEED-gold) high school was designed with many skylights.?ÿ Every one needed to be replaced along with the roofs of both gymnasiums.?ÿ The gym floors were water-damaged.?ÿ Every school vehicle except the buses had hail damage.
A buddy of mine who is about 80 now was nearly killed by grapefruit-sized hail when he was about 20.?ÿ He was doing some work out in an open field with some little stripper oil wells and more than a half mile from any shelter when the hail arrived.?ÿ There was one small hedge tree nearby that provided a little bit of protection when he put his head directly behind it at ground level.?ÿ His entire body was black and blue.?ÿ A nearby field of mature corn was hammered completely to the ground, looking as if a giant mower had cut it all down going one direction.
We had the most serious hail I've experienced last spring, but that was less than 2". Many new roofs, a few windshields, and lots of dent repair needed all over this end of town.
Then in August we had sustained straight winds (direcho) over 120 mph that took out 65% of the tree canopy, more roofs, plus houses and cars hit by falling trees in a swath across several counties. We lost two trees and neighbor a three-season porch.
Sounds like you got both storms wrapped up in one.
Yikes, fella. ?ÿPlease keep us posted.
Today is one of my son's birthday. He is 10 today. On his 1st birthday we had the family over to our house for his party. At the exact time he was about to dive into his cake the sirens were blaring! All the women and kids went to the basement, men to the front porch.
We were spared the tornado but got hit with baseball size hail. We lost two windows and got the roof torn up. Our cars were in the garage, but everyone who came to visit that day got their cars totaled. We figured there was about 225k damage done when added up. I have a picture somewhere with the hail stones sitting on top of beer cans displaying their shared diameter. The neighbor two doors down had hail stones come through the roof and hitting his kitchen table! His house also lost all siding on the north side - stripped to the plywood!
Hail really does suck! Glad you are safe, I was watching all the live feeds on Twitter last night looked scary!
Sorry to hear, but I hope you get everything back on track. At least you were not in the field when it hit.?ÿ Largest hail I've experienced was quarter size.?ÿ I'd hate to see baseball.
All the women and kids went to the basement, men to the front porch.
Funny and true.
Or up on the roof to get a better view.?ÿ Some Okie's have lawn chairs and stocked beer coolers fastened down up there in advance of such occasions.
I've had a long term associate (my age) that came to the US from New Delhi at the age of 18.?ÿ ?ÿHe had no idea where Stillwater, OK was at but he wanted out of India and OSU accepted him to their engineering school.
He hadn't been at school long when they heard the tornado sirens in the dorms.?ÿ Out the door everybody went to see if they could spot it.?ÿ Typical Okie behavior.?ÿ My buddy was aghast.?ÿ People die in tornadoes. He couldn't figure out why everybody was heading outside and drinking beer.?ÿ
He just chalked it up on what would become a long list of crazy things we do in this country.?ÿ?ÿ
PS - I'm still proud of the fact I taught him how to properly pronounce the name of the 7-11 stores.?ÿ Being schooled in New Delhi with the Queen's English his pronunciation just didn't sound right.?ÿ I wrote down the words seb'n lev'n.?ÿ He finally got it right.?ÿ
Although he never really looked comfortable in a cowboy hat... ;)?ÿ
Tore the piss out of everything...
?ÿ
That summed it up for me.?ÿ Your eloquent and vivid stories rarely have brash inclusions of adulty words( im no prude just observing) so when I rerad that, I knew you meant business.?ÿ
We had a Tornader rip across Post when we lived on base at Ft Sam Houston back in the 70s, totalled century old trees across the street and yet left us unscathed.?ÿ The floors were soaked because Mom and Dad opened every window in the place before we retreated to the basement for shelter.
CBS News last night reported?ÿsoftball-sized hail in Oklahoma and they held up a big chunk of ice to prove it.
I wonder if there any locals and beer involved in that.
..I wonder if there any locals and beer involved in that.
I'm sure.?ÿ The other night I watched a neighbor (from relative safety behind my front door)?ÿ dance out into the 80 mph wind and baseball-sized hail just to retrieve one of those honker hailstones.?ÿ It was then I noticed his porch was full of his buddies.?ÿ
The house is a rental full of college kids.?ÿ In their defense the porch was covered and on the east side of the house with the wind and hail coming from the north and west.?ÿ Still that's a foolish thing just to grab a selfie with a dumb chunk of ice.
SWMBO wanted one for her Facebook junk before they melted...I told her she was welcome to dance out there herself.?ÿ She did.?ÿ But only after the storm had stopped.
I was less fascinated with the evening's events than some folks.?ÿ :(?ÿ?ÿ
@paden-cash glad to hear your reports after the storm. ?ÿI hope the cleanup goes well and the insurance writes you a really really big check.
