My new toaster

The old way:

Blow the ash dust off the old cast iron stove, with a short blast from your lungs. Then throw as many slices as the stove top hot spot will take. Usually between 4 and 6 slices. Toast one side for about one minute. Then flip over, either by hand, or metal spatula. Do one more minute, and you are done.

?ÿ

I like a double toaster. 4 slices, that is.

Well, our old one was quitting. Only toasting one side. So, I went by the local thrift shop, and bought a 4 slice toaster for a buck. It's a kitchen aid. They cost some $90 new today.

It's motorized. Put 2 slices in one side, and press a round button on the front. Electric motors slowly lower the bread slices. Then wire frames move in to center the slices. Then a display comes on. It has a knob, that allows the user to dial in how dark or done to make the toast. It has a progress series of light bars. Each bar represents about 15 seconds. When it's done toasting, the electric motors slowly lift the toast. Then it beeps 4x to let you know it's done.

I'm concerned. Will the next generation of toasters NOT WORK, without an app? So Google can see how many slices of toast you make, and how done?

Will we simply talk to our toasters?

Probably. And, it'll cost alot more.

----

Boss, I'm sorry I'm late. I was delayed by having to download a new app for my toaster. I'd forgotten my password.. So I had to go through remembering the name of my first pet turtle, in order to log into faceLook, and autocorrect kept fixing my misspellings, because my turtle was named Tuttle. And my attempted login were rejected, 3x, and I had to wait, until some time expired, to try again......

Then, my self driving car would not go, because when I changed my login, well the login to the app failed, because Tuttle, the login for the car, is all lower case. And it would not let me go, until I'd figured out its problem.

Anyhow, it's nearly time for lunch.?ÿ

What's there to do today?

Reminded me of this song that my wife's trio sings (without the dancing):

Modern movies would have seven car or foot chases and fifteen dead people in the time it took for that guy to sing his song about scrap'n the toast.

@holy, yes, do you remember "speed"?

@Bill, I've scraped the toast before. Usually because I got distracted, while toast was on that old cast iron Franklin.

I was born in a cabin, without electricity. We had a small generator, with a cast iron Tecumseh engine. So we could "run a drill" or something. We had a servell gas refridgerator. When storms came through, dad would say "well, the wind blew out the refridgerator". I could just see it going down the road. It took me a while to understand how a gas fire, could make something cold. As I remember, it used ammonia for Freon.

@nate-the-surveyor?ÿ

As my mother told the story, it was 1948 and my parents had not signed up to get service from the REA lines that went past their house in 1947, the same year my sister was born.?ÿ One week my mother was sick and simply had no energy to wash clothes as their old washing machine required cranking by hand to do the work of the agitator.?ÿ Dad had to handle that job because the baby was running out of clean diapers.?ÿ The next week he got them signed up to connect to REA.?ÿ Then they got one of those fancy-dancy wringer washers?ÿ with the wash tub setting on one side of it. The a regular wash tub on the other side half full of clean water to use to rinse the clothes.?ÿ When I was big enough, I was assigned the duty of pumping all of the water needed and then being the "rinsing boy" swirling those clothes around in the cold clear water to rid them of soap before getting the reverse trip through the wringers before heading out to the clothes line to dry.?ÿ Meanwhile, big sister was washing dishes with water I pumped with most of it being heated on the electric stove.?ÿ The one heating stove for the entire house burned coal and/or wood.?ÿ Sometimes I would offer to wash the dishes if my sister took my place at hauling in the firewood.

Note in the following video how the work is actually a three step process.?ÿ The big chore for a little boy was draining the water into a big washtub to drag out into a convenient spot in the yard or garden.

?ÿ

?ÿ

?ÿ

?ÿ

The light blue panel directly above the was a safety feature.?ÿ It would release the head, allowing the upper wringer roller to move upward.?ÿ Then the smaller white device on the top could be rotated 90 degrees to lock it in the up position.?ÿ That was vital when a finger or hand was caught by the wringers and pulled between them quite forcefully.?ÿ Quite a painful event even if no fingers get broken before the pressure is released.

?ÿ

?ÿ

?ÿ

Bet you all didn't know that I was named after Abraham Lincoln.

We used to go once a week to a laundromat. And put them on a clothes line, to save dryer coins.?ÿ

We finally did get a wringer washer, alot like that one. And, they still went on the line. Mom still would go to laundromat, to wash my brothers diapers, and dry them. He was developing a rash, because they were line dried. Machine dried diapers are disinfected, by the heat.

Nothing like a generator, and wringer washer.

Thanks

If I had the space and money I would be a sucker for high end kitchen appliances.

Well, here is an appliance I can recommend. It's called an Insta-pot. They come in several sizes. Basicly, they are electric pressure cookers. Cooks a pot of beans in about an hour. Rice fast.

But, this is quite good. 8lbs tough deer meat. 1 tsp salt. Put it into smoker, and smoke for an hour. Then, salt it, and put into Insta pot. It turns out so tender you can eat it with a spoon.

@Gary

I am not too sure. This is more like the Javad of toasters:

And, it's called "R180" Fancy that!

But, if it were a JAVAD of toasters, it could do 4 slices.... Just sayin!

There's a lot to break on that one that I don't have to worry about on my 1980 model.

Motors and electronics don't like high heat, so their life will be short.
