Looks like it was returned to the shelf, that makes me smile.
I understand you don't want people surveying with it....but they have gps anyway. I could see a distance estimator for a number of purposes if you are bad at estimating distances. Golf comes to mind off the top of my head.
" 4085.79' " who besides a surveyor or civil engineer is this for?
I wouldn't worry. The package says "Measures distances up to 40 feet"
I think "4085.79" is the volume.
I realise that it is just Stanley's version of a Leica Disto which are indeed very handy tools.
clearly if it said "4085.8å±" it would be for a surveyor, and if it said "4085.07895324" it would be for an engineer. So I don't know who it's for if it isn't for just the general public.....:-/
So.....there's this Engineer and Surveyor on a game show. It's sort of a "Bachelorette" type game show, and the engineer and surveyor are the last two contestants to win the affections of this beautiful single lady.
They put the two men @ one end of a very large room, and the beautiful single lady on the other end. The host told them that they could both start @ one end and go half-way to the woman and wait 5 minutes and go half the remaining distance again until they got there. Each time they had to go halfway from the remaining distances.
The Engineer said right away that he's out, and the Surveyor said he was still in. The Engineer looked @ the surveyor disgustingly and said "you dumb sh** surveyor, don't you know you'll never get there if you are allowed to go only half-way each time?" The surveyor replied...."That's fine, eventually I'll get close enough".
(sorry for the hijack on the thread) 😉
My first thoughts were some other areas of so called benefits and uses.
Vitamins, food supplements, where labels say 'may benefit', 'may help in ....'
Stanley Distance Estimator - "May be useful in determing the size of ...."
My Leica Disto is rock solid, even surviving a spell submerged in a local river. Dismantled and dried out works perfectly.
I've often wondered how these cheaper varieties perform.
Perhaps the name indicates its possible ability.
40 feet
That measures farther and is more repeatable than 1/2 a chain.
B-)
I bought the Bosch version last year. It has a range of 230 ft and claims to be accurate to 1/16 in. Seems to work well, but I haven't really put it to the test.
I agree it is supposed to represent the volume but the answer is wrong with the three dimensions.
The numbers aren't on the display; they are on a plastic overlay. I can picture a draftperson dutifully putting actual numbers on the artwork, and someone with a degree in marketing changing them to "sexier" values that will sell more units.
"DISTANCE ESTIMATOR" guys, it uses ultrasound not a laser. That is why the range is limited.
Read the fine print.
I cannot say much for the math.
I would take a half chain any day.
