Aloha,
We found this on the wall of a local cafe. Thought it might lighten up some of the tough discussions going on here...:-)
Aloha

🙂

The biggest problem with being one's own boss is suffering the consequences of following such a schedule far too often.

Yswami, that just shows how different things are on different islands. Here everyone has their nose to the grindstone all day long every day.

Not only in Hawaii

The first surveying job I ever had back in 1970 was with the city of Roanoke. That schedule looks a lot like my typical day back then. I actually expressed concern to my chief about the lack of real work and he basically told me to shut up and go along.

Not only in Hawaii

“city of Roanoke…”

It’s the same way in Florida. What upsets me, as a taxpayer, it takes eleven county employees and six county trucks to repair a 5’ x 8’ chunk of sidewalk in a rural area.

B-)

That reminds me so much of when I was stationed in Honolulu. I LOVE the Hawaiian work ethic. They get the job done and then kick back. The City crews were on a "Pookapow" (I know that I did not spell that right, but that's what it sounds like. "Hooked on Phonics..Phase 2). For example, the garbage crews were given a large area to work. When they had gathered all the garbage in that area, the day was done. If it took 2 hours or 8 hours, the day was over when they had picked everything up.
It seemed to work really well. You just didn't want to be standing too near the garbage can when they came whizzing by because you might get a quick ride to the dump!
The crew that worked my area NEVER stopped the truck, except at stop signs or lights. The workers jogged behind the truck, grabbed a can, emptied it, ran it back to its place and then on to the next one. It was awesome to watch.

.

I went out to a job one day to see why the job was not getting done by one of my crews , I did the black ops thing and did some intell gathering from a concealed vantage point and found they were sleeping in the truck after lunch and stopping for biscuits in the morning . They were probably working 3-4 hours out of a day . Needless to say situation was fixed pretty quick. I rolled up on them after lunch and party chief had the plans spread out like he was reading and was sleeping in the front seat . banged on the window told him to bring my truck back to the office .

I wish more things where like that. A lot of jobs should probably be paid by the task, not the time.

I do love 'island time'. In Bali they have a word for it, 'waktu kerek'. Means 'rubber time' and it's no joke. I missed a flight by two days after visiting another island. Counted the days off until I need to return to catch my flight. Got to the airport and the lady at the counter tells me I missed the flight by two days. Have no idea where those two days went. 😛

Looking forward to visiting your island Kauai end of January Yswami. My significant other will be in charge of us catching our flight home. 😉
