That's awesome, and all, but I have found banks and creditors prefer money. Your mileage may vary. 🙂

During the low point of the recession around here (summer of 2009) I was running my solo business out of a home office. One afternoon I get a knock on the door and there is a guy in his late 20's holding a resume and he said, hesitantly, "Uh, is this Antietam Land Surveying?". I said "sure is". He said "I guess you're not hiring". So I'm standing there on my front stoop, in shorts and a torn t-shirt with brine stains on it, and the only thing I could say to him was "Nope, I'm not hiring, I'm canning pickles."

I assume he tells a similar story about meeting a disheveled, and possible crazy, pickle making surveyor.

Yeah, but these are the best pickles! They may be an acceptable form of payment at my small hometown bank.

I was thinking that a bank would not really want to be in a pickle and then start wondering from where the expression came. According to Wordwizard:

IN A PICKLE colloquial: In a disagreeable, embarrassing, or awkward situation; in a sorry plight; in trouble; in a predicament; in hot water.

Etymology: It is said to come from a phrase we borrowed from Dutch (about five hundred years ago), in de pekel zitten‰ÛӉÛ÷sitting in the pickle,‰Ûª with ‰Û÷pickle‰Ûª originally being the brinish, vinegary liquid used to preserve meats and vegetables. So, anyone sitting in the pickle ‰ÛÒ in pickle juice ‰ÛÒ would be mighty uncomfortable. The expression was formerly used in more serious situations: ‰ÛÏIn the pickle lyeth man by nature, that is, all we that be Adam‰Ûªs children.‰Û‰ÛÓSermons (1585) by John Fox. Shakespeare was also fond of it (see circa 1616 quote below).

I assume he tells a story about meeting a disheveled and crazy surveyor who smells like pickles.

Trust me. Your stash is safe. Leave your survey chariot unlocked in my yard and you won't need to worry about those jars disappearing.

Never have been a big fan of pickles or salsa. A little bit once in a while is plenty for me.

Now, if that had been gooseberry pie or rhubarb pie instead, I could be charged with grand theft-sour stuff.

Man - I'd devour all those in one afternoon! Drooling all over my keyboard...

was wrapping up an 80 ac survey when the neighbor comes out and asks how much would I charge to stake is other line out for a fence.

seeing how I had already tied in his corners I looked in his barnyard and said "about one of those hogs cut and wrapped".

It took me 6 months to eat all that pork
