My doctor was a jerk anyway...no flowers or dinner...and he NEVER called me the next day...o.O

I visited the ER once after a nasty machete gash across the back of my hand. The doc said I probably needed a tetanus shot.
Nice looking nurse (about my age, I was in my late twenties) came in with a hypodemic nurdle to give me the shot.
"Do you need me to drop my drawers?" I asked.
"Sure" she replied.
I dropped my Levis to my knees, turned around and leaned on the exam table with my elbows.
She walked up and scooted my t-shirt sleeve up a bit, swabbed my shoulder with the alcohol and gave me the tetanus shot. She plopped a Band-Aid on my shoulder and swatted my bare ass as she left...and smiled out "Thanks, sweetie!"
I felt so cheap....
My doctor said the the DRE is a crude exercise which doesn't detect anything until it's too late anyway. I was sent for a routine colonoscopy instead.
I'm pretty sure my doctor used 1" rebar.

In the last few years I've lost 2 brothers-in-law to colon cancer at a too early age. Which was all the more sad because it is a very preventable form of cancer. But the DRE doesn't get it done.

The DRE is looking for prostate cancer, not colon cancer. You may be thinking of the sigmoidoscopy versus colonoscopy debate.
FWIW, my brother had normal -- even low -- PSA numbers, but a DRE found an abnormality. They biopsied and confirmed prostate cancer. His surgery was successful, and he's been good as new for years now.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've had family members impacted by colon cancer as well. You're right about the DRE not being the most effective means for early detection.
I wasn't trying to be light about the purpose for a colonoscopy, it's just that routine isn't the first adjective that springs to my mind.

I stand corrected -- I looked it up, and found that it's also used for detecting indications of cancer in the lower colon. I'd never heard of that before, only its use as a prostate exam.

During my joyus episode with prostate cancer they had to "seed" my prostate with little gold do-dads so the radiation thearpy would know where to go.
They used a Louisville Slugger with a bunch of wires attached to it. Yesiree that was an enjoyable experience. :'(

My Doctor is a Prostrate Cancer Survivor. He checks every way possible. He says it is his job and my duty.
