It's just plain miserable out there. Birmingham is shut down due to the cold and snow. We weren't "supposed" to get snow but the forecasters missed it again. Children are stranded at school because parents can't get there to pick them up. Almost all Interstates are at a standstill. Emergency and maintenance vehicles can't get through to help clear the roads. You folks up north can KEEP this kind of weather, you're more set up to handle it. I know it's just January and the middle of winter but Spring can't get here soon enough to suit me.

We would be more inclined to keep the cold and snow if you southerners would keep that miserable heat and humidity to yourselves...... call it payback 😀

Is Canada, far enough north? Any place, north of Ohio, works for me.

Daughter is working in Charlotte, called a couple of hours ago. Said everybody else had left work a couple hours earlier, then called and told her she should leave. She said it was snowing a little but wasn't sticking on the road as the wind was blowing it off. Said they were predicting an inch of snow, and she was amazed at the reaction. Of course, she spent about 6 years in Boston.

It was 8 here this morning, been in the single digits several days already this year, with below zero wind chills. Starting to get used to it, but ready for it to get gone. Ground is froze about 6" deep, can't drive a stake in it. For some reason the contractor decided to work all winter this year. Brrrrrrrrr

We got the snow. 24° in Mississippi? Supposed to go to 17° tonight. Darn Global Warming!!
House is a mess. Let the dog out to do her business. As soon as her Hoo-hoo hits the snow, she runs back in. Sooner or later she's gotta go and I don't think it will be outside. Put a space heater in the garage and threw her butt out there. I'll let her back in the house as soon as there's a wet spot on the concrete and a satisfied look on her face.

I am fortunate because I work from home and did not plan on doing any outside work today. Where are you?

Spent a few years in Michigan where they have everything geared to conquer snow. Could not get over the amount of money that must be spent year in and year out to do nothing but try to keep major roads, highways and Interstates passable. The average household budget that goes towards heating and extra fuel spent keeping vehicles running all the time is outrageous. Believe me, you notice how much of your income disappears just to try to operate in what the rest of the country views as a normal manner.

On the other hand, I worked with a fellow who bragged that he had never owned a vehicle that had an air conditioner in it and swore he never would. Our two bedroom apartment had a small 110 A/C unit stuck through the wall in the living room. We rarely turned it on. Most apartments did not have such a luxury installed.

I hope you all are ok. I'm near I-20 on the East side of Birmingham and would offer to help if I could, but as you know, no one is going anywhere tonight.

The below 20°F range is back again and has not risen above freezing in two days and maybe another day or two.

I have three cords of firewood left and have to replace the housing on my well pump that has a crack from freezing.

If this is what it takes to get rid of bithing critters come next spring, then so be it.

😉

We had nearly -10° air temp last night with wind chills near -40°. Granted, I stayed in the office today, but it's not like you fall over dead being outside. You prepare for it, be careful and keep an eye on eachother.

15° above seems balmy this winter.

Ain't nothing to me. I grew up in that stuff.
Me and the neighbor and his boys went out to push people out from being stuck.
We didn't make no money except for that one lady who was about freaking out. She demanded we take her 20 spot and have some drinks. Her brand new Mustang was about to slide into a big rig but we couldn't stand to see that - especially me. 3 of us jumped betwixt and manage to muscle her new Steed away from said monster rig.

We had several people offer money - we didn't ask - and as soon as they were on their way, they were gone. So much for believing in people.

Don't know how many times I stopped traffic for some on-coming idiot. Maybe Andy might have heard of the fiasco on 92 between the Woodstock-92 and Glade road exits. We were slap in the middle of it.

I enjoy it personally. Reminds me of home. Wherever that is. The worse, the more remembrances.

There are hundreds of people who are still stranded all over Alabama. They are staying in motels, churches, stores, offices, and strangers homes. Many left their cars and walked away. Weather forecasts predicted the storm was to miss the Birmingham area but would dump 2-3" of snow on Montgomery and South Alabama. They missed it by 100 miles. School officials trusted those forecasts and didn't close schools early enough. Many children were forced to stay at school (with their teachers) because their parents can't get to them.

Please help us northerners understand what's going on down south.

I'm seeing a dusting of snow that is causing a state of emergency? Is it the accidents caused by ice that's snarling traffic? The videos and images from the Atlanta area are showing quite a few big rigs stuck or crashed. You would think professional drivers would be used to travelling all over the country and have encountered situations like this before.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic.

Since these snow events don't occur very often, there are no snow plows. Not even at the Atlanta airport. Whether or not someone is experienced driving in icy conditions, it's hard to get around on roads that are blocked by wrecked or stalled cars. Southern California has similar traffic problems when they get heavy rains. They are not accustomed to it.
Because the forecasts predicted for the snow to occur in Central and Southern Alabama, most of the preparation by state agencies for it by state agencies were sent there.

They canceled school on Monday for Tues and today. Also, all government offices and a lot of businesses were closed . So there was no reason to go out on the roads. I di go out yesterday to buy some hot cocoa mix. ; ) schools were also canceled last Friday for a freeze
All bridges, interstates (raised portions were closed last night so getting anywhere was a 'No can do". All roads closed to New Orleans.
Schools start early here (Aug 6) to have hurricane days built into the school calendar.
It is about 28°and it is supposed to thaw this afternoon. Supposed to be in the 70s° on Saturday.
Trying to keep my little Meyer lemon tree survive. so far so good..
satsumas are doing OK but the local strawberry crop could be a disaster this year. Hoping the best for the strawberry farmers.

like Steve said. No ability to salt or clear roads. A lot of major roads are elevated because of wetland issues and freeze easily.
Weather like this is uncommon. I am probably the only one who owns a car window ice scraper/snowbrush in SE Louisiana. I bought one a few years ago up North during a winter stay. I usually use a mardi gras plastic go cup as an ice scraper. Most people usually use their driver license or a credit card as an icescraper.
Different weather culture here. SWMBO thinks that any temp below 70° is cold weather.
