Here's the best part of an editorial addressing (purported) actual queries made to Google about Cinco de Mayo..in a humorous fashion:

When is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco = 5. de Mayo = of May. So, May 5.

What is Cinco de Mayo in Spanish?
Cinco de Mayo.

When is Cinco de Mayo celebrated in Mexico?
On Cinco de Mayo.

When is Cinco de Mayo celebrated in the US?
*Sigh. On Cinco de Mayo.

When is Cinco de Mayo in Portland, Oregon?
We've been through this already.

When was the Cinco de Mayo war?
There was no Cinco de Mayo war.

The holiday celebrates Mexico's victory over France in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It was a relatively minor battle -- the French reclaimed Puebla a year later -- but a symbolic one because a small Mexican army defeated a larger occupying force. By 1867, Mexican troops had driven France from the country.
Many Americans assume Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. It's not. That holiday falls on September 16 and commemorates the Grito de Dolores, a priest's ringing of a church bell in the town of Dolores in 1810 that triggered Mexico's War of Independence from Spain.

Is Cinco de Mayo the Day of the Dead??ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿNo. D??a de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a three-day holiday in which families across Mexico gather to remember deceased friends and family members. It's usually held from October 31 to November 2.

Where is Cinco de Mayo?
Wherever you want it to be. If your party game is strong, Cinco de Mayo could even be a state of mind.

And our absolute favorite question ...

Is Cinco de Mayo about mayonnaise?
We give up.

I was told it is a day created by Americans solely to drink alcohol and pretend we know something about another country but it is mainly for drinking.

Is there any other day set aside for a foreign country purely to celebrate and drink alcohol?

St. Patrick's day I suppose. Nobody really cares about the story it's to drink leads of beer.

Mardi Gras, another celebration with lots of alcohol consumption with twist. When women show their tata's we reward them with fake beads of no real value.

@just-a-surveyor

Cinco de Mayo was created by Mexican brewing companies to increase sales during the spring, which has no real holidays. In fact, there is a rumor that some people actually give up beer-drinking for Lent.

?ÿ

It did not exist when I was a child.

Do not name any watercraft "de Mayo" as it will be doomed to Cinco.

@just-a-surveyor

i haven't done any research on this one, but i can state that a mountain of observational data convinced me to change the name of "dia de los muertos" to "dia de las gringas," on account that it has been so violently kidnapped by yuppie white ladies who are so into frida kahlo, sugar skulls, and margaritas that the only real room left for latinos around these parts, at least, is to sell tacos and tortas to all the drunk "chicas" after they snap off their requisite number of instagram photos together.

Drunk chicas you say, hmmm nothing like low hanging fruit.

If only I were 30 years younger.?ÿ

And I never quite understood why a bunch of white folks would be interested in celebrating the day of the dead so I get your obvious frustration of yet another holiday being hijacked for the purposes of more alcohol consumption.?ÿ

Mr. Cash has a subtle knack for gentle inference about some of the elderly that frequent here. It's much more considerate than a reference that used "f-ing old fart". Currently, according to later generation's, us boomers are presently disposable. Clutter that needs to be disposed of.?ÿ ?????ÿ

@flyin-solo

Your cynicism is unbounded.

But I see your point. It is a designated party day to partake in food and drink. I don't have a problem with anyone of any generation enjoying life or their pursuit of happiness with friends or family. People need to let their hair down unless you are of the puritanical mindset.

 Just don't throw up on my lawn.

When is Cinco de Mayo in Portland, Oregon?

Around here the 5th of May is about the time of year you can begin comfortably sitting in the outdoor patio area of your favorite Mexican eatery. Kind of important.?ÿ?ÿ

@norman-oklahoma

That is a major cultural faux pax you don't refer to Cinco de Mayo as the 5th of May as it is never the 5th of May it is Cinco de Mayo, gringo.
