I am a novice surveyor. I haven't surveyed for 2+ years. I used an HP 48 and need to buy one. I am not sure what card I need. I know it uses a SMI survey overlay. I only used it for cogo and basically points side shots and intersections of lines to create offsets for 90 degree lots. Does anyone know what card I might need for these basic functions. I seem to remember a number of 128k. But I could be mistaken
HP no longer makes the '48 and SMI is out of business. Good luck hunting for a used SMI Standard Cogo Card. Those that still have them aren't giving them up willingly.

Thanks for the reply friend. Would you say that the SMI standard cogo card was what I was looking for?
I would say so, yes.
BTW, 128k is the memory capacity of the HP48gx. That was a lot when they were new in 1993.

I may have what you are looking for. Email me at whitey1371 at gmail dot com.
So are we all in agreement that I need an HP48gx with an SMI Standard Cogo Card and SMI overlay? I used the 48 for intersections of points to create offsets and also side angle side, etc. Also for cogo beg points side shots and cogo point in direction with bearings and distances. Also northings and eastings etc. coords.
When they pry my cold dead fingers from around it.................
I am not looking to use the hp48 as a data collector just as a calculator
Just buy the HP50g then, or for less you can have the hHP35s
How about a hp50 with some dZign software installed
There is this other thing called a pencil and a field book.
I have no problem with a pencil and a field book whatsoever. But I was truly looking for advice on what card I would need for an HP 48
My concern is that I cannot remember what card was in the hp 48 that I used. I remember using the 48 for putting in jobs, using it for cogo, point in direction with bearings and distances, putting in northings and eastings, etc. I also remember intersections of lines to provide offsets. I used an SMI overlay that was off-white. I do not need the 48 for data collection. Does anyone know what card I need for the 48?
SMI made a series of cards for the HP48. I own one. They came in progressively greater capabilities, Basic, Standard, Data Collection, Robotic, etc. I'm sure that what you are thinking of is either the Basic or the Standard. I own a Standard card myself. It's been retired from daily use for some time, but now and then I still go to it. It helped me through the Oklahoma exam a couple of years ago.
TDS also made a version. TDS made the jump to the Windows Mobile based platform our data collectors all use today. SMI didn't.
The SMI did come with an keyboard overlay. It would be tough to use without it.
As to whether it is "what you need", I can't really say. Frankly, you could probably find a cogo program for your PC pretty cheap that would work as well.
Search for a pdf of a manual online and find what matches your needs.....
Finding something that is available will be the next search.
I use the HP48SX as a calculator. There are programs for it that you can enter into the machine if you can't find the exact card you are looking for. Contrary to Mark Mayer above, I wouldn't be surprised if there is an old SMI card in a number of people's closet somewhere who no longer use it. Keep checking and I wouldn't be surprised if someone remembers theirs and will gladly see if you could put it to use. (It sounds like one of the posters in this thread have one to release)
Depending on the types of calculations and other how much memory you need, You may not even need the GX. For me the sx is plenty powerful. It says "Made in America" on mine. Hopefully they are a little better than the after they shipped off the manufacturing to other third world countries.
If you google "SMI COGO Card" you will find that they can be bought from a number of on-line sources. But they certainly aren't cheap. And Chuck has been offered a couple right here. That idiot Mark Mayer was shooting from the hip, I guess.
Sorry. Didn't mean it as an insult.
