I'd love to hear from those who were experiencing slow load times before. As one person has already pointed out, he was experiencing 30-second load times before, now the site is loading in less than 5 seconds for him.

For those with already-speedy load times, you likely won't notice a big difference, if at all. I have 5mbps cable internet and even though the site was already fast before the move, it loads instantaneously for me now. It may actually be the fastest-loading site I've ever been to. Seriously.

Anyway, whether or not it was already fast for you before, I'd be interested in hearing any noticeable differences you've experienced since the big move. We moved the site on Saturday night.

Thanks! 🙂

It is noticably faster. I have DSL but my WIFI slows that down a bit.

Is the data moving in bigger packets or whatever?

No, the server itself is not bogged down with a bunch of crap, basically. The old server is shared with hundreds of other accounts for other clients of that host and special software to manage all of those accounts. Between the uncertainty of what all those other accounts may have installed on their accounts and the software that runs it all bogging everything down, you can imagine how that might affect performance.

Plus, the new server is hosted by a good friend of mine who owns Maxim Hosting and he is really good at what he does. He assembled this setup specifically for us, based on our needs and with special attention paid to anything that would enhance performance. He spent weeks developing this system and he's so happy with it, he's moving all of his own stuff to an identically-equipped system. I believe he's looking at eventually offering similar systems to his other clients as well.

Even better, he can easily upgrade it as we need more bandwidth and resources to handle the traffic and space. So we only have to pay for what we really need, as we need it.

And to go even beyond that, he has a lot of "redundancy", which, in his world, means that there are more virtual pipelines for people to reach the site, making it much less likely for you to have trouble reaching the site. Each person's connection makes several hops across the internet in order to get from their connection to the site -- if there are more potential ways for you to reach the site, then it's more likely you'll get here and get here quickly.

Pretty cool, huh?

And another cool thing? He's got it setup to automatically backup the entire site to another data center 1,000's of miles away every 24 hours. If the main data center were to, let's say, implode without warning, all traffic would automatically be routed to the backup server and there might be a couple milliseconds of delay during the switch...

Startlingly competent!

Wendell, I'd say that is all startlingly competent, but you've raised the bar high enough that we expect no less. Great job.

Even with my dial-up, this site would (almost) always load in less than 10 seconds.

Hey Wendell

Since it seems like many people who are trying to respond to the Original Post, end up responding to the Last Post......

Maybe you could have a POST REPLY TO THE ORIGINAL POST come up at the very bottom of each thread. (just above the BACK TO FORUM INDEX)

You could still respond to any of the replies, but those of us who are used to the old format would be less likely to incorrectly respond to a Reply Post.

Actually, slightly slower for me now. It takes 15 seconds to go back to the forum from a thread vs the 10 seconds it use to but some things are worth the wait.

getting worse, now it is about 25 seconds. Doesn't seem to matter if I click "back to the forum" or go back by my browser

Hi,
I have the same long delay when hitting the back button on my internet explorer (7), I guess it's microsoft specific, I don't have this problem when browsing with mozilla firefox, nor with safari
