Can a Trimble R8 be controlled by a laptop, (without a Trimble controller)?

I would like to use on a tripod and collect static data.

Thanks

Do you not have internal memory in the R8? I believe I have it in my 5800...although I use my TSC2.

It is a Trimble R8 Model 2.

The manual I have states...
The Trimble R8 receiver logs GPS data internally on 6 Mb of internal
memory. 1 hours logging = 10 Hz 2,588 KB / 1 Hz 335 KB.

Though is it possible to initiate logging?

Yes you can use a laptop, yes you can use the receiver, you have days of capacity with it, and yes you can start it logging with a data collector.

So just to check, can you configure and start logging _with_ a laptop but _without_ a Trimble data collector? I don't (won't have) one!

I seen it done, I think you need an emulator and you may need a chord, but yes it should work, not sure how much you will have to spend.

Download a free program called Trimble GPS Configurator. You can plug your R8 into your laptop with a serial cable. As far as cooking static goes, if your internal memory is cleaned out, then you just set the receiver up and turn it on. It should start logging automatically, but you might have to play with the settings in GPS Configurator to make that happen.

Thank you all
A video on Trimble GPS Configurator.

The emulator sounds interesting though 🙂
