Greetings Earthlings?ÿ
I have joined the forum for I too measure stuff. Needing to measure stuff as inexpensively as possible and am in need of a GNSS receiver. After what I consider at least somewhat careful research, I think I've decided to go with a South brand unit. Specifically the South G-1 Plus.
I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with this brand and would be willing to share your thoughts on it.?ÿ
The spec sheet lines up well with some of the top brands available and better than most.
So why are they so inexpensive? I have already heard the whole "Chinese stuff is inferior" reasoning, but that aside (I have loads of stuff that's made in China, and so do you I'm sure) is there some fundamental difference that makes them so vastly different in price? Because the specs on the South Galaxy 1 Plus are equal to or better than Trimble. More features too. So what's the deal???ÿ
We have been using South S82-V base and rover since 2013, SurvCE DC. Internals are Trimble BD970. I think I read somewhere that Mr T invented RTK but didn't patent it (or was it they did invent it but the patent ran out and they didn't renew it), and at that time decided that they would offer out their components for others to assemble, which is good. Although its pretty much faultless, we do have good support from the local supplier (who appears to have a good rapport with the Chinese folk at South). As of a couple of years ago we've been running on 3 constellations.
Happy with my CHC unit and service from UT.
If you haven't spoken with Mark Silver at iGage in Salt Lake City, do yourself a favor and give him a call. He sells CHC, and provides the absolute best service, both before and after the sale, that I've ever run in to.
Mark Silver (just click the igage icon at the bottom of the page) has the best interface for using gps.?ÿ The gps
units are very reasonably priced and so simple to use.
He also has a lot of helpful videos and is gifted at explaining things.?ÿ
You will not be disappointed with iGage. Top notch GNSS, and even better customer service!
Working for over a year with a South G1 plus (336 ch BD 990 trimble board).
Great results on vrs rtk flepos 4 constellation in Belgium.
I run survCE on a leica cs15 as dc for the South G1 plus
Know nothing about South, but I agree, Igage is a good bet. I've used the static CHCX90D reciever with excellent results. Mark is the best for support.

@ttt242 Hi, I am going to buy a South G1 Plus from China. I live and work in Georgia USA. What was the customs tax on your unit? Also is there anything I need to be aware of as far as compatibility with a GNSS RTK subscription company? and The unit comes with a H5 Handbook controller and a survey program called EStar. Will that get me started collecting data that I can use /convert to State Plane Coordinates and download? I also have SurvCe but haven't turned on GPS yet. Do you know if SurvCe is compatible with the South G1 Plus?
Just be sure of the controller you choose to use. Mfr's are becoming more and more exclusive.?ÿ
I'm reading that Carlson Data collectors used to work with most other products. But not any more.?ÿ
Good cogo is really important, for field calcs.
In the year 2040, I'm guessing that programs like ox-hunt, when based on real gis data will be very useful. It's useful now, but technology will just get better.?ÿ

It looks like it comes with different options for the number of channels. The 692 channel option looks interesting for the price. My fieldgenius tablet has the option for the South G-1 Plus.
Check all settings closely in particular with processing data, cloud, etc. I belive it is understood that Chinese companies have to share data with the CCP if asked.?ÿ Could be a backdoor to geodetic data of US main land.?ÿ I think this is why DJI is not allowed for Federal work as well as other companies.?ÿ
If Trimble sells the boards to them I see no reason why they wouldn't be just as good at the Yellow cases. I would only have issues if it was stolen intellectual property.?ÿ?ÿ
Hey, I tried to connect my CS15 with our South Galaxy G1+ (using smartworx). Couldnt get it to work, is it only using SurvCE that it works?
