Any recommendations or warnings about particular SD cards for use with a Topcon GR5 receiver? Brands, read/write speed etc? How big of an SD card is necessary for a 4 hour static GPS session? For the sake of extremes, lets just say at 1 second intervals. Please forgive the newbie question, but 100% of the work I have performed has been with a data collector, not logging raw data. We are, as I hope many firms are as well, preparing to assist in the GPS on BM effort and want to make sure we are 100% prepared before we go out in the field. Thank you!

SanDisk never done me wrong.

The data is reduced to text data and that does not take up v ery much room

Download and delete from the SD card so you would not have to search through so many files while in the field.

You could even go with a 128gb card for $25 and that would hold most everything you would ever collect.

The manual should give you more than a hint. At this time I doubt you could even find a SanDisk Card that would not hold 24 hrs of 1 second data. 8 hours is in the mega byte category. I used to worry about it when I had legacy receivers with only 1 or 2 megabytes. Had a program to give me an idea, but that was 3 computers ago. Do not worry about it and I am still using rather old receivers, but not true antiques.

I think OPUS decimates to 30 seconds, so faster is just wasting memory if that is all you will do with the data. But as has been said, that still isn't a big file for today's memory.

We only use industrial/military-grade cards based on experiences like the ones above.?ÿ Check the operating temperature specs of the cards.?ÿ The extra $20 to buy a good one would seem cheap if a day's work was lost.

?ÿ

Here are a couple of examples (we currently use the Kingston ones):

No, no no don't by a 128GB SD card, it may not work. Purchase a card size 8GB to 32Gb. The large capacity cards are not compatible with some devices as they are formatted differently and you don't need it. If I remember correctly,?ÿ a 16Gb card should store about 200hrs of static data recorded at 1 second epoch. As others have noted, OPUS uses 30 second epoch.?ÿ

Back when I started doing GPS c.1997 we had 2Mb cards. While we took care that these were clear at the start of each day's use I do not recall ever filling one up.

Jaccen's advice about military grade cards is good. Obviously I would think so, he is linking an old post of mine. I ignored it once and lost a hot summer day of data.?ÿ ?ÿ
