I was also giddy as a school boy watching the tracking reports as my JAVAD system was crossing the country last month to arrive two days before Christmas.?ÿ What a great gift!?ÿ Of course, I then spent the next two weeks glued to the thing.

Well yesterday was the first day where I really used the stakeout functions of the LS.?ÿ ?ÿ Wow.?ÿ
As a daily Trimble user, yes still have and use Trimble, our LS is the Black Sheep of the group. But, thats okay, I love it!
So a full day of staking clearing limits in moderate scrub brush and hardwoods 50 foot tall, with the average diameter of about 8-10 inches. Here in the St. Louis area leaves are not out yet, but all the trees are budding.?ÿ
I was using the LS with MODOT's RTN with a mobile hotspot. I was able to maintain fix at all times, in all conditions. (For the record, I would have expected the R10 to have been able to maintain fix as well). But here are the differences I noticed...
1. The telescopic monopole was clutch. This is such a great and overlooked convenience when tromping through heavy brush. Nothing sucks worst that a 2 Meter pole with a data collector, and a stupid cell phone Velcro case attached to the pole - all of which are in the perfect position to get snagged up on everything when walking through the brush. With the monopole and the LS self contained unit - those problems go away.
2. The stake out feature on the LS will give you a Course to Target (CTT) and Direction to Target (DTT) when you stake out to a designed point. Now I know this sounds pretty basic and to be expected. But from a Trimble user to another...No more staking with reference to North, or the Sun. Seriously, simply (rotate) turn the LS and the unit will tell you the course to the target and the direction. This info is updated instantly. This feature alone saved me a great deal of time and allowed me to walk to the design location. Just face the LS the bearing you need to walk and go the distance it tells you, done.
3. Stake to line - I had to use this function to stake clearing points between two points that were not intervisible. This feature/routine worked very well and was easy to utilize. Set-up was similar to Trimble.?ÿ
Overall, my first full day of staking with the LS was great! I would much prefer to utilize it to the R10 for staking. One thing I want to play with is to see if I can get it to generate an As-Staked report via the LS in the field. I would like to be able to export a report that would show station of offset to a line with cut/fills. I want this when I stake sewers so that the cut sheet can be emailed directly to myself and the contractor from the LS in the field. Maybe it already has this feature??ÿ

So when staking a point with Access you never noticed that big arrow in the center of the screen that tells you what direction you need to walk in? Just curious...
Yes, but never really works well for me. The internal compass on the LS works much better and faster. The LS display is also at the heads up level. So looking down at the arrow versus ahead the direction you are actually looking is also an added benefit.?ÿ
As a point to take note...I consider the R10 to be the benchmark of which all compare against. I still bleed Yellow (except when it comes to College Basketball - then it is UK Blue!)?ÿ

ALL the field crews canned that horrible 2 meter trimble pole, nobody ever liked that thing. I'm not advocating for the R-10 over the Javad, but the pole issue is completely irrelevant from my perspective. I can see where the self contained unit would be nice, but I love using the data collector on my 4-wheeler mount to guide me from point to point, something the Javad wouldn't be able to do.

I don't use an ATV, but I've seen photos of the Triumph-LS mounted on an ATV via quick-release within view and reach of the driver.?ÿ It looked like a pretty useful setup.

I have a rule that the receiver goes into a padded pouch on the rack when moving about. The exception to that is doing topo, but when locating corners I pop the receiver in the pouch, put the DC on the DC?ÿmount. I really like our old 5700 for topo, it goes into the pouch all day, the antenna on the antenna mount and the DC on the DC mount. Putting the receiver on the antenna mount can be rough on them. The 4 wheeler can bang around through the sage, rocks, ravines.

I've been through a lot of different configurations to mount a unit on a 4-wheeler. There are some interesting contraptions to do that. I'm good with doing topo using my mount, but when I need to drive off road across rough country, I want the receiver in the padded pouch. Of course you can still navigate with it in the pouch, so getting to where you need to be is not an issue, then pop it on the antenna mount when you get there and let if fix. It would be difficult to use the Javad on my mount since it's?ÿover the drive side tire?ÿand you will want to look forward as you drive. The DC sits in the middle front and is very easy to look at as you drive.

Of course, if antenna placement is really an issue, the Triumph-LS will accept an external antenna.
If I'm doing stake out while using an ATV, I set the LS on its monopole across my lap. The pole collapses to a length of 2', so it sits there easily and I can see the screen as I approach the next point to stake.
I performed a rolling topographic survey last summer. To do that I mounted my J-Pod on the front rack of the four wheeler with bungee chords. Here is a picture of the mount without the LS on top. This was good because it kept the LS at eye level and was easy to disassemble when I was finished.
One thing I want to play with is to see if I can get it to generate an As-Staked report via the LS in the field. I would like to be able to export a report that would show station of offset to a line with cut/fills. The station is stored as an attribute for the saved point when staking a line.?ÿ The cut/fill is calculated from the distance between the design and surveyed design coordinate for that point.?ÿ Both of these fields can be added to the text file export:
I seem to have it in my mind that the Javad LS has an app so that you can use an android device to at least see what is on the unit screen, maybe even control it. I have a Lowrance HDS sonar that can do that via wifi to iOS.
