Hmm, I'd say you gots you a problem.
Looks like a small honey bee swarm. The ultimate in RTK base security!
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
Hope you weren't in a hurry.
First item of business: Don suit of armor
Send the rodman over to it with a can of spray paint. 😉
Well that's a twist, there. Seems like all I've ever found on the bottom of the tribrach, were spiders crawling into the optical plummet.
Surely the insurance company will understand when you send them the picture as part of your claim for a new base.
Now this leads me to think... Market a fake or dummy bee swarm, as a base guard...
What did you put on that handle that attracted them lol
A fake swarm, including a realistic sound track, would be a great anti-theft device. Even I'd buy one.
Did you call a bee keeper? Seriously?!?

I made an attempt to. I called our County Extension office, they have a "Bee Guy" but he was in New Jersey at a scientific conference and didn't call me back until the next day. I also called the local bee keepers association, they have a list of people across the state that might come out and collect them but the guy listed for this area never called me back, I finally gave up at 7 PM and did what I had to do.
They were extremely docile until I pi**ed them off but once I did it only took about 20 minutes and they moved on down the road.

I am the rodman...and the crew chief...and the owner...definitely a downside of being solo. I was extremely fortunate that I never got stung. I was getting ready to call it a day so I walked over to the tripod to unscrew the tribrach but looked through the tribrach first to make sure it was still on the nail, like I had done a thousand other times except this time all I saw was black, thinking what in the world is going on, I looked through it again and still saw black, so I took a step back and started to stick my hand under there and that's when I about had a heart attack. The 1/2 second that it took my brain to process what I was looking at seemed like an eternity. I'm not allergic to bee stings but I've also never been stung by more than a couple bees at a time, definitely a near miss.

Nothing that I can think of. When the "Bee Guy" called me back the next day he said that it sounded like a swarm of bees had emerged from a hive looking for a new home and they settled on a temporary location which happened to be my surveying equipment. He said they would more than likely move on within a few days.
They swarm when they have a new queen to start a new colony. They are docile at this stage. When my family kept bees, we would take a hive (gum) nearby and tap on the side. Sometimes, a scout would investigate the hive and report back to the swarm. It is amazing, when the hive would move to our hive. One time we had a swarm land on a cedar branch about 8 feet in the air. My Grandfather positioned his truck under the swarm. We placed a stepladder in the bed of the truck. The plan was that I was to grab the limb each side of the swarm and My Father was going snip the limb. We had a "watch this and hold my beer" moment. When he snip the limb, the branch sprung and I lost my gripe. The swarm and branch rolled down my chest and on top of my Father and into the hive. I was not stung and my Father was only stung once. We did have a new colony and got honey for years to come. We were never quite that aggressive collecting a swarm after that.
My bee story ain't nothing like these. I have a tree that gives off a real pleasant flowery scent each spring, and each spring I get a swarm of bees that visit the tree for a few days. They stay in the top part of the tree, and have never bothered a thing, but the sound of them is almost creepy.
