I have a 5-year old Carlson Explorer 600+ with what appears to be a defunct Bluetooth module.

All other functions and ports (serial, wi-fi, usb) work and the unit is overall in good condition. Never dropped, etc., but has been used for five years.

Without any software, what is the market value of this unit?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

$100 is the most I would pay for it. But that's just me.

5 years is old in the life of a DC.

I think I got $500 for mine when I traded it in (almost brand new 4 years ago, no survey software).
IMO, you might get half that now.

I would love to have it!!
I wrote a little software for it years ago when it first came out and LarryP lent me one for a few month to develop a class that I taught for him.
It is the only WinCE 5.x device I ever had access to without using software emulators [which are never as good as the real thing].

Larry said I could take it in the field and use it if I wanted to - and I wanted to. However, the folks I worked for at the time weren't too keen on that idea. They were all stuck in "old school" and didn't want to even hear about "new school". My last survey manager, Chris, in NC had no problem with it but we had already started a big job when he gave me the go-ahead. I didn't want to change out equipment in mid-stream. I was always told to keep everything and everyone the same on a job - especially big jobs. That one was a couple thousand acres (maybe less) if I recall.

Anyway, it might be old now, but I'd still love to have it just for personal experimentation. I don't care if the Bluetooth doesn't work, but the WiFi might be able to piggy-back on something around here. It sure did when I was working in downtown Asheville, NC.

As to what it is worth now, I have no clue.
E

Most, if not all, of the value is going to be in the software, I believe. A new license of that software (latest version 2.61 etc. would cost $2495 according to Carlson). As far as I know, Carlson supports the transfer of its software to another party. If you're running SurvCE 1.xx then I believe you'd need to factor in the upgrade cost of $495 into your evaluation of what it is worth, so net new value of software would be $2000.

That said, I just purchased a used Carlson Explorer for $800 with all modules active (TS, RTS, GPS, and ROADS), version 1.xx. My upgrade cost will be $495, so my net cost for full latest version of Carlson SurvCE is $1295, excluding any value that the data collector has, which I assume is not much.

Be careful to compare apples to apples when searching for what is available on eBay, etc. I purchased a couple of months ago a JettXL data collector on eBay for less than $1000, installed with latest full version of Carlson SurvCE. It turned out that when I attempted to register the software with Carlson, it would not accept the registration, and I was told by Carlson personnel that it was an invalid registration number. Needless to say, I returned the data collector to the vendor for a refund.

IMO, Having a valid registration is the KEY to the value of this data collector. Being able to prove that to your purchaser is a good selling point.

Al,

Thanks for your input, it is most appreciated. See my other response regarding the CF Bluetooth card I bought. The 600+ is up and running again. So far, it has served me well for the past 5 years; hopefully another 5...

Thanks,

-Matt
