I was the highest bidder at this auction http://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/auction/view?auc=1142155
Woo Hoo!
This was the first EDM I used, circa 1975. I don't remember, but I think my boss might of paid about 10k; what do you think it's worth?

Coool!
Not the first distance meter that I ever played with (the first was an Electro Tape DM-20 I think).
I first got my hands on one in 71 or 72 (that decade is a bit fuzzy). Was still using one (from time to time) until about 76 or 77 when we got a AGA-76.
It would stretch to 10k feet plus when everything was "right" (and usually pretty dark).
Many memories...some good, some not so good.

When I first got my skinners on a 3800 I thought I knew for sure I was in the future realm. That was '73 or '74...you're right those years are a little fuzzy.
In 1975 the company purchased the 3810A (?) total station with the HP9815 desktop "computer". I can remember being set-up on a hill top and other company's crews would stop by just to "ooo-looky" at the gear.
Man, weren't those the Glory Days!
BTW - that's a good deal on that old HP "punkin".
Very nice condition, congrats!
Wow, cool website. Check out this nice looking level set up:

Pay close attention to the third picture and what the rod is leaning up against.

I’m still skeptical of any of them new contraption “magic Box” thingies. Especially if it uses a battery (GASP!) Just going to stick with the Gunter’s chain and a compass. 😉
:good:
Lugged one of them up and down the Elliot State Forest. And I do mean UP AND DOWN!
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. Typing class 9th grade!
Just picked it up. Yeah, that thing is heavy!
I remember there was an HP-41 program that allowed you to
Set up your theodolite over the control point.
Set up the 3800 over a nearby (as in maybe 10ft) Aux point.
Use theodolite to measure angle to 3800.
Tape distance to 3800.
Now you can
Use theodolite to measure angle to any other point.
Use 3800 to measure dist to that other point.
HP-41 does calc to figure dist as if from theodolite.
and the coordinates of the other point.
Great for radial topo
Boy we had it all!
We read angles and then substituted the HP and yoke as we had tribracks and targets before we got a pole.
My first electronic measuring experience were the valve telurometer..
RADAR a great pickup BTW is yours feet or metres or both?
