Surveyors from the five states represented by the 6th Principal Meridian are planning to gather at the Initial Point on Saturday, June 11, 2016, in commemoration of the 160th Anniversary of its establishment. At this time it will be an informal gathering of surveyors from surrounding states just getting a chance to meet and greet each other. Bring your own food and beverages. Meet at the site beginning around 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. and stay as long as the day keeps us there. All surveyors are welcome to join us, I just wanted to be sure and get the word out to the 6PM states.
Like a Pilgrimage to Mecca for surveyors it sounds like. Kind of a chance to "re-zero and recalibrate" prior to commencing more survey work. Good idea! 😉

Is there a place near where we could all pitch a tent?

Mahaska doesn't have too much to offer. Then again, we could double the city's population...
edit : spelling of Mahaska

Probably not much area right at the site in the summer since crops will be in the fields. There are a couple of small towns nearby that would probably allow tents in the park if asked in advance. Mahaska and Narka in Kansas and Reynolds and Hubbell in Nebraska.
As E.T. said in the move: Hooooommmmmeeeee!
Most here do not realize the headaches that come with having a field that is in two different states when it comes to dealing with Government agencies. It's bad enough having one field in two different counties. All the tiny little bureaucrats HAVE TO protect THEIR turf.
Sounds like a fun early summer run. I'd like to see the place and it's only 400 miles from here. I need to inventory and figure out which motorcycle I want to ride and start giving it more oats at night.
About 15 years ago I took a 500cc single cylinder to a meet at Oklahoma's IP. Although the bike made the mile long dirt trail up to the monument just fine, it wasn't made for the 90 miles of highway to get there...almost wore me out.
I'm already planning in my head...I just realized all those Kansas back roads in early June will be full of the wheat harvest gypsies and their combines..better take some goggles.

Looks like Holy Cow has relatives there, maybe we could bunk with them.

To paraphrase a quote from the guy who surveyed sections along the Iowa-Minnesota border, he had the honor of informing a settler that his cultivated field of a few acres was in two states, four townships, and six sections. (The last tier of sections was a small remnant.)
It also reminds me of having visited one of the cast iron 10-mile markers on the Iowa-Missouri boundary. The renter of the farm told me the owners were going to clear the fence line. I told him he should point out the monument to them if they didn't already know about it. I put flagging on the monument and painted trees and the ground to call attention to it. I see now on Google Earth that they are farming around it.

Not a problem as long as you enjoy sleeping in chigger-infested grass every night throughout the summer under an open sky with no mattress other than your own body fat. That's how it works for Cousin Bessie and her friends that appear in Jerry's photo.
Less than a week away. Bring your own food and drinks!
Sorry, Jerry. Would love to show up but the family has other plans for me.
I will see you there Saturday.
It's published as an event on Geocaching.com
https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC6FMG2_cito-at-the-6th-pm
where others have posted at the bottom of that page that they are coming. One post says they're from Germany!
It's no wonder your knees are shot.
