I will be sitting for the MS state specific exam in October and I was looking for some advice on reference material that may be helpful other than the obvious statutes and SOP/MTS. Thanks in advance.

MS Summer Session 7/29/2011 Natchez

Try to find the material that Roffie Burt has published.
I think there are two books. One on Indian Meridians and the other on Boundary Law.
Also Gideon Fitz's instructions for the GLO surveying.
I believe that the are available from the Mississippi Association of Land Surveyors.

Also for your consideration, The MAPS Summer Session will be held in Natchez at the end of July. Professor Burt is scheduled to speak on the Indian Meridians and also Mr Milt Denny will talk about his recovery work on the 31st parallel (Andrew Ellicott Line) that he has been involved with in recent years.
It is a very interesting project (mission?) that that he has undertook in recent years. I spoke to him on the phone last year and provided him with some contacts on the Southerly side of the 31st. He has put a lot of work on the project that needed to be dome by surveyors.
I will be in Natchez. I have met Professor Burt but never have beard him do a presentation and it will be interesting to hear Mr. Denny present a survey topic other than the 'business angles' seminars that he has done and of course Natchez is very appropriate place for his presentation
Also, you can get in touch with some of the officers of MAPS. I have found that they are a very cordial and helpful group through the years.

MS Summer Session 7/29/2011 Natchez

I took surveying from Roffie Burt at Mississippi State when he was the Lab Assistant(1967) and he actually taught most of the class. He has not changed his hair cut style since then. He just would not be 'The Burt" without that "do".
He's a hell of a good guy and his lectures are very interesting.

Oh, jthompson, my guys trell me that a copy of the current BLM manual is a BIG help.
Also, I work with The Board's President Elect and the NSPS Governor at Maptech, Inc. in Jackson. If you have any other questions about the test, I know that either one of these guys would be more than glad to give you any assistance that you may need. The President Elect, Tim Brewer, may be easier to catch in the office. Tell him Dent sent you. That should put him in the proper frame of mund. 😉

Fitz's and Burt's Books and the BLM manual. Also study the board's state law material, download at the website www.mississippisurveyor.com, or the link is there. The books and other links are available there.
