I am starting to gear up to study for and take the Fundamentals of Surveying exam. I was wondering if anyone had recently taken the exam and wanted to share what they used to study up. Also, I would love to hear about your experience with the test as well as any helpful hints for time saving. I'm looking forward to hearing from you all.
Been 12 years since I took it, but I purchased this book along with the practice exam(s) book. I made flash cards of all definitions and worked through the book completely - multiple times. I also bought a pre-calculus book and went of the quadratic equations, trig including radians vs polar coords. Trigonometry for dummies would also be good to pick up.
The exam is not easy. Don't waste your time with boundary stuff, but do glance over them. The exam is extremely heavy on math. It's 8 hours of testing everything and you will walk away feeling whooped. It is by far the hardest exam I have ever taken. With that all being said, I studied my ass off for it and passed the first time.
Another bit of advice I told one of my technicians...."It's a computer based test now that you can take when ever you want now. Just sign up and take it then you know what to study". When it was my turn I had to do all the paperwork and only had two chances a year.?ÿ

Standard test taking strategy is to go through the exam answering the easy questions quickly, and skip over the hard ones. Then go back and work on the hard ones. Don't spend more than 5 minutes on any hard ones. If you know it will take more than 5 minutes to cipher out the answer, skip it. Then go back a third time to work out the truly difficult ones. You might be surprised how many times the answer to one question is made evident by the content of a later question - or an earlier one.
Beware of the units. They sometimes like to mix different units into a question, so don't just focus on the numbers.
