So I have been working as an instrument operator for around seven months and I am hoping to take the CST Level 1 exam. However, there does not seem to be a lot study guides specific to the CST Level 1 online other than a few practice tests. I was curious what resources other people who have taken the CST Level 1 used for studying? Books and video lectures would be ideal but I know beggars can't be choosers.
Go to a library, public or college, and get a textbook on basic surveying and mapping. Study chapters on sources of error (personal, systematic, natural), Public Land Surveying System (PLSS), metes and bounds, how to convert DMS to DD, addition and subtraction of the same, and basic first aid.
Go to the NSPS website, CST exams, and carefully read the test matrix for the CST I exam. The matrix will give you a good idea of what you need to know. Get a three-ring binder and compile reference materials such as a PLSS township map. Also, get a diagram on section breakdown. You can bring reference materials to the exam. Get an approved calculator for the test.
I'm a CST III - Field (Boundary). I think getting certified is a good thing, whether or not your job requires it. Please let me know if I can help you further.
HI you might try mentoring mondays they have links to Dane Corville and his book and Jerry Mahum website with lots of info available.
Try LearnCST, they have study materials online for self learning.
Looks like the good stuff costs money. It's mostly about self-study. You have to be motivated and disciplined enough to set aside time to study.
Yep, that's what I do. Didn't pass Level 2, barely. Retaking this fall/winter. I have been without a PLS mentor for 3 years and barely doing any survey work. Changed jobs and I am now under a PE/PLS and Associate Engineer to work with.

Please let me know if you need any help preparing for the exam.
I've been an instrument operator for seven months and plan to take the CST Level 1 exam. Can anyone recommend study resources? Ideal resources include books and video lectures, beyond practice tests.
Land Surveying Simplified by Paul Gay is a useful entry level primer.
