FDOT is preparing to roll out an update to the EFB data collection software. Training for this new software would be geared towards field staff but there are some things that the office staff should know about so they should attend as well.

As things are tight right now and we all need to maximize the work we get from our employees, would you support sending your staff to a seminar on Saturday and do you think that they would have the interest to attend?

The local chapter of NCSS does all their seminars on Saturday. Since most of the people who attend own their own business we find that works well for us since we do not have to miss a day of work.

In your situation, I say, yes for a Saturday seminar. Those persons who object because they do not want to work on the weekend need to have their names on the list of first ones let go when staff reductions come along. Anyone not willing to invest some of their own time in sharpening their skills is a good candidate for unemployment.

Note that I am not saying they should be willing to work every weekend. But 2 or 3 times a year does not seem unreasonable.

Also note that I did not say you demand they attend without pay. By all means they should be paid or given comp time.

It has been my experience that PEs prefer Fridays and LSs prefer Saturdays.
Another observation: In a mixed crowd, the PEs will be those who are professionally attired.
