Attended a career fair at a local high school today

Nothing fancy, I was promoting a tech school

Talked to dozens of students

No one knew what a surveyor was

If you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem…

Nice outreach Radar. I've been to grade school and they had a ball with the metal detector. NSPS makes some great material for things like that.

Outreach is absolutely needed! BLM published the Middle School Teaching Guide about Cadastral Survey in 2023 and our Midwest BILS (BLM Indian Lands Surveyor), Ken Roy, had an opportunity to be part of a field exercise after the students went through the guide as a lesson. Attached are 2 articles about the experience. From what Ken said it was a great success.

I am currently working on an opportunity to do something similar with a homeschool group here in Idaho. If all goes as planned we will take them out and search for an original corner. If we find it (we will) then we will remonument it and produce a set of Official Remon Notes. I am going to put the kids names on field assistant page as honorary assistants. If all goes well then it may open up other opportunities with homeschool groups or schools. Along with promoting Cadastral Survey I will make sure and open their eyes to all the possibilities in the survey world to promote all aspects of surveying. Fingers crossed we can get some more kids interested in surveying!

I replied then tried editing and now reply is gone so I will try again. Might end up being two replies.

I have an opportunity to do something similar with a homeschool group here in Idaho. If all goes as planned we will take the kids out and search for an original corner stone. If we find it (we will) then we will remonument it and produce a set of Official Remon Notes. I plan to put the kids on the field assistant page as honorary assistants. We will also show off all the gizmos that we use in our work including the old instruments such as compasses and transits. Hopefully this will open the door to other similar opportunities.

Not only do I plan on promoting Cadastral Survey but I will also open their eyes to the many facets of surveying. Hoping that we get a few more kids interested!
