I'm going to be lining up lecturers for continuing education in TN a year from now. I've got a few ideas of my own, and I'm getting good feedback from other members of my professional organization (TAPS). But, I would love to hear some more ideas from anyone out there willing to tell me your favorite continuing education seminars that you have attended. I would appreciate it if you would include instructor's name, etc. if you can. If you haven't ever attended a continuing education seminar that you enjoyed, you can give me some ideas for a course that you think you would enjoy. I appreciate you taking time to reply.
Ok - this is just me, but anytime I can attend a seminar by Gary Kent, I do- personally, I feel he is one of the best.
I like free.
however, there are a few that cost money that are worthwhile.
Such as Charlie Taylor teaching Railroad Surveying 101. He used to post regularly on the old forum but haven't seen him here yet. Very much worth the price of admission. I recall it was offered through AREMA.
Anything from Larry Phipps or Jeff Lucas. They are both entertaining speakers that know their stuff.
Nothing on Laser Scanners PLEASE! Boundary, legal, business practice all get my attention.
Tucker
That's Charlie Tucker
Knud Hermansen (legal issues)
Jeff Lucas (legal issues)
David Ingram (ethics issues/historical)
Dave Doyle (NGS issues)
Wendy Lathrop (FEMA)
Dennis Mouland (ethics)
Donald Wilson (legal issues/forensic surveying)
Milton Denny
John Stahl
Kim Buchheit (business issues)
There are others (I apologize to those who didn't jump right into my head), but a couple of days worth of seminars by these guys and ladies are worth every penny spent.
I second everyone mentioned above. I have heard each of them.
I will add John (JB) Stahl to the mix. JB will address legal issues and from his own experience as well as do research in the specific state laws and case laws in the state where he is speaking as far as I can tell. I am a big fan of his.
charlie Tucker is the most knowledgeable guy I have ever met on Railroad Surveying and an expert researcher on railroad right of way. Very good speaker.
Larry Phipps is a great instructor on numerous topics. He is dynamic and very knowledgeable.
Gary Kent is quite the speaker as well.
While I'm at it, I will throw in Dennis Mouland as well. One of the best.
Dave Doyle is great. Very dynamic, funny, and can discuss quite the high-math topics and bring it down to an understandable level for surveyors.
Good list SC
edit: didn't mean to dominate every other post.

Thanks for the correction. Anyways, very good class which has provided me with invaluable insight.
I had the pleasure of sitting on one of Knud's classes recently. Quite entertaining to say the least.
John Stahl & Charlie Tucker are two presenters that have presented in AZ in the past year. All of the feedback has been positive. If you need to understand how to deal with Railroad boundaries Charlie is the resource. John Stahl's presentation "First Surveyor" applies contract law to explain the principles that allow us to accept a monument or set a monument on an existing boundary not previously monumented.
Both speakers can hold your attention for a day long seminar.

+1 on Gary. I forgot about him. He is the ALTA man.
I will second (third) JB Stahl and Don Wilson and add Walt Robillard.
Dittos on the Gary Kent plug.
Another guy that I would highly recommend is Michael McGinnis of System Dividends. You want some coursework in the real way GPS works, and how to become efficient with it, and maybe even trust some things - he is your guy. Not over technical, but just plain and simple.
Last year in AZ one of the more informative and interesting days I spent was in a course with a fellow beerlegger. In my opinion that program is amongst the top 5 presentations ever, in my 30 plus years of going to conferences. I don't think he has a regular business because he also teaches, but he goes by "JB Stahl" on this board.
edit: man oh man, was I too slow....
Why can't we surveyors understand those 'high level math topics'?
Tom Meyer as well as others mentioned.
Oops, I guess I said that wrong.
But the average surveyor may not be as educated as you and some others in this topic. Education in geodesy is not a requirement to become licensed; and few that I have met aren't as knowledgeable as Mr. Doyle in it. Most surveyors I know are extremely intelligent and I definitely didn't mean anything negative with that remark.
Jim Simpson or Jerry Knight for Riparian.
DDSM
Ray Hintz for anything least squares or GPS related.
no offense taken, i just had the same reaction as when i've sat in a geodesy lecture only to have some old timer in the back stand up and claim he is part of the flat earth society.

Those rednecks don't like Jeff for some reason. At least that was the feedback that I got last year. I guess they got mad because he made them look like idiots.
