After a friend gifted to me his Topcon HiPer Lite units, it's been an interesting journey and discovery trying to get them working. They're so Javadian! I'm using old and modern Topcon and Javad software to connect to them, and by simply renaming the .tps extension to .jps, I'm able to process the raw data files. The one thing I was wondering about, and maybe somebody reading this forum post might have some ideas, was how to change the default recording interval on the base (HiPer Lite) from 1 second to 30 seconds? I can change the logging value using?ÿ PC-CDU (old), Net View (modern), Net View & Modem (modern), and/ or TRU (modern), but as soon as I turn the base unit off, and then back on, it defaults back to 1 second. The rover accepts the change to 30 seconds without issue, but I can't get the 30-second recording interval to stick on the base unit. I have no external data collector or other user interface, just the receiver's MINTER (FN) button minimal interface.
Kind regards,
Kelly
Do those receivers use an SD card for logging data? If so is the one in the base more than 2MB?
I have Sokkia units of a similar vintage and you could use a bigger than 2MB card, but it would default to I second interval whatever you did. Only with 2MB or less could you change the interval to something else.
@cf-67 - No, there's no SD card. The internal file storage capacity on the gifted HiPer Lite+ units is about 8 MB, which translates to FULL after about 2.5 hours when collecting data at 1-second epochs. I think that this was the basic package offering at the time of purchase, but larger capacity storage options might have also been available. In any case, it was internal storage and not removable.
The thing with Hiper Lites, and indeed all Topcon receivers of my experience, is that the on board memory is built in, but needs to be "turned on" by the application of money in order to be accessed.?ÿ ?ÿ
Sounds like your base unit is resetting upon power-up. Go through your settings in PC-CDU and check for this.?ÿ
I would load a demo version of TopSurv or Magnet Field into a Windows PC Tablet to start the Static session in the field. This way you can add the point ID, antenna height, and type while starting the static session. This will be stored in the TPS/JPS log file.

Thanks Lee, I appreciate the suggestions. I've been going through PC-CDU and can make the change in the logging interval, but saw no such resetting upon power-up option. I've likewise tried over the past several days to coaxing the 30-second setting to stick using the Topcon Receiver Utility (v3.6, build 169638) without success and similarly using Javad's current build of Net View & Modem with the same outcome.
I don't own a Windows tablet, but wondered if there might possibly be any Android apps that are known to work with these old HiPer Lites? I've connected TRU using Bluetooth from my PC. Thanks for your help.

@kelly?ÿ
I will look for the setting in PC-CDU. I'm sure it is there, I don't have a Hiper Lite.
No Android app for this. It works with old Windows Mobile device. Very inexpensive.?ÿ
@leegreen - Thanks Lee, very much appreciated.
FWIW - I installed MAGNET Construct from the Google Play Store, paired my HiPer Lite+ successfully with the phone, but am unable to connect using MAGNET Construct. The "Warning You can connect to additional GNSS and..." nags for me to purchase a subscription for connecting to additional total stations and additional GNSS receivers; however, I've not connected MAGNET Construct to a single receiver or total station. The use of the word 'additional' is implicitly indicating that at least one thing is already connected with MAGNET Construct when it is not. I've also written to Professional Services, Topcon Positioning Group, RE: Case #01070692 Subject: MAGNET Construct v5.1. I await their meaningful reply.
@kelly?ÿ
Pretty sure Magnet construct only supports only new GNSS recievers. Not Hiper Lite. It may connect, but will not work properly.?ÿ
You may have better luck trying a Javad app.
@leegreen - Thanks Lee, that's exactly what I'm experimenting with at the moment and it's looking encouraging! Using JMT for Android, I've started a 4-hour, 30-second epoch static session; will post results after lunch 🙂
@leegreen - Several tests today using JMT for Android in 30?ø F temps
The unit that is designated as BASE, and which has possibly some power issues that may be addressed later by replacing the batteries, was started from JMT successfully; however, the first planned 4-hour occupation ceased after 1:07:00 hours; the second planned 2-hour occupation ceased after 1:05:00 hours.
The unit that is designated as ROVER, and which has healthier looking batteries, was started from JMT successfully and completed its scheduled sessions without issue.
Is there any means to fully turn off all radio activity? This would be desired because 1) it would save on the batteries and 2) I'd like to run static sessions without the antennas having to be attached to the tops of the units.
@kelly?ÿ
I think you mean 100 minutes, or seconds, not 100 hours.
Yes, TRU can do most anything, including turn off radio.
Have you looked to see if memory is full on the problematic unit?
Actually, I never wrote 100 hours! Funny how the forum software removed the colons placed between the numbers.
1) 1 hour 7 minutes 0 seconds; and 2) 1 hour 5 minutes 0 seconds

Maybe you're thinking of a different receiver. These units are Topcon HiPer Lite+ and while the TRU (
locally stored C:/Program Files (x86)/Topcon/Topcon Receiver Utility/Help/Default.htm#Topics/ReceiverManaging/Overview.htm
) manual does mention the option to turn off the radio, it's for the HiPer HR and HiPer VR. The TRU (v3.6, build 169638, Thursday, June 17, 2021) interface that I'm seeing shows no such option:

With those old units, we had to use a different app to control radio settings. So if TRU doesn't work, you may need to use Modem_TPS. If can't figure out to disable the radios, at the very least set them both to rover receive signal. It takes more power to send as base, and less the receive as rover.
@leegreen - Thanks Lee, I really appreciate your help with this; it's been most valuable. I will look further into finding Modem_TPS
@leegreen - Perfect! Thank you so much!!
?ÿRX LED lights on both units remained off after power cycles after using Modem-TPS v2.4 p0 (build Mar, 24, 2008)
My instincts has me still a little leery about running the units without the antennas, at least until I've thoroughly tested modem behavior after full resets, factory resets, etc.
After completing another round of tests using JMT for Android and AFTER having turned off the radio (as described above) both the base and the rover successfully ran for 2 hours.
I'm planning on replacing the dodgy batteries in the base unit soon after they've arrived later in the week.

Depending on where you are, there may be open source static files available for use with the rover, at least until you get the other unit in working order. Again, a motorcycle batt (12v) works great (especially for a base).
@dmyhill - Thank you for the reply. If by open source, you mean CORS, yes, there's pretty good coverage here.
