There is a lot of shared knowledge in their archives. Knowledge which comes from all of us, and should belong to all of us. Does any internet protocol come into play?
Does POB own it outright or are there RPLS rights?
In doing whatever it is they are doing over there they are definitely not being "Good Stewards".

That was awesome BL!!!:-D
Dugger
Purloined the name from the old Rocky and Bullwinkle Show with Mr. Peabody.
Some of the P&R posts need to be shredded, burned, and buried in a time capsule, never to be seen again...;-)
It depends on their terms of service and what everyone agreed to when posting to their board. Generally speaking, however, they likely have control of the data even though we posted it. Then again, it's my understanding that nobody has ever challenged such a thing in a court of law, so who knows what would really happen.

yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see it all disappear. People posted for years on the Appalachian Mountain Club website. A great wealth of information on obscure hiking trails, bushwhacks, campsite locations, history, hiking stories, etc, etc. One day they changed the format of the board and deleted all the archives without telling anyone beforehand. The board pretty much dried up after that.
Agreed!!!!......totally awesome.
I noted quite a few familiar names there (I went back to 02/05/2007).
Some have passed on and some just don't post anymore....they are missed.
Sadly, I couldn't sign on and post a reply to one particular post....:-P
Maybe I am misunderstanding the issue, but the RPLS archives can still be accessed. You do have to be logged in as a user.
Use the 'Advanced Search' option located near the top of the main page. Select 'main forum' as the search filter and enter the key word(s) of the search. The response is very quick.
All of the shared knowledge is still there.

I think the worry is... If the site shuts down, will the data be lost?
