Actually, here we both are as youngsters ...

Hey, it was the mid-50's. I be stylin'. I wish I could find something with the address of that house on it. It was somewhere in Del Paso Heights, I think. We were the only white people for miles as I recall. We were moving down from Oregon and my dad found the cheapest place in town to rent while we got oriented. My mom and I would take the bus to the grocery store and young as I was, I just rolled with it, but I remember my parents talking about the racial thing. After that, we moved to Del Paso Manor where there was one black girl in our whole high school and her last name started with "A" so she was always first in line for everything.

Are you sure you stepped on that drum without encouragement?

I know on Christmas morning when the kids would open up some 'loud' toy we bought them for some unknown reason to us. As the day progress I pretty much encouraged them to break it.

[morning]
"Wow cool a truck with sirens and horns. WOW THANKS MOM AND DAD!"
(little john instantly heads for the stairs with toy in hand)

"No son don't ramp it off the stairs you might break it"

[midmorning]
(constant sounds of sirens and horns for several hours now)
"Son I know you love that new truck but don't you want to play with something else for a while?"
(little john can't hear me over the sirens and horns and just keeps playing)

[midafternoon]
(Never ending siren sound, I had already claimed we were out of batteries but Betty FOUND THEM!)
"Hey johnny lets ramp that truck off the stairs. I bet it would be COOL!"

Peace at last, peace at last. 😉

This never actually happened but don't think I didn't think about it a time or three.

Randy, it doesn't get any better than that picture...the only problem is once you caught one that size at that age it is hard to match!!

odd that you should post this.
Our son is doing a 'time line' photo project for his 2nd grade class this week where he selects 5 photos from birth to present and assembles them on poster board with some drawings and writing
He chose an infant pic, first trip to NYC, first day of Pre K, first soccer team and current front tooth missing photo.
I got out some of my old photos to do the same and show him.

I found one of me in grammar school at about the age in your photo. I had a nice clip-on bow tie.

I don't have time to scan but here is one that I have scanned. I must be 1 or so.
I am the long haired one. stilol have the bay fat and hair
That is my older brother ex marine, ex g-man and current cave diver gun collector and concealed weapons instructor who know lives in FL.
Maybe the bow tie was passed down to me but that looks like a real one
🙂

Elementary school, about the same era as "the Beaver".
IIRC, the world really was black and white back then.

What I do is I save the photo to my desktop then I just upload it here. Kind of a pain in the butt if you wanted to post dozens of photos but for 1-2 it is easier. 🙂

January 1971.

The picture was taken in either 76 or 77. It was Centennial Elementary in Colorado Springs, hence the 76 flag and Liberty Bell on the wall behind me. By the time 2nd grade came around, we had moved to Iowa.
