Chatting with some old timers today, we were reminiscing about the days of spam and crackers or Vienna sausages for lunches away from town. I know many people pop over to the local Mc burger queen for their daily meal, but for those in the outback of nature, what do ya'll carry for a midday energy boost? In my bag, for extended trips, I may carry MRE entrees, canned chili, beef stews, or the great and powerful spam, with crackers to be found somewhere. On daily trips, i still rely on sandwiches, maybe from subway, but homemade as often as not. Some days beef jerky suffices, and then some days it's just to much trouble to carry out food, feeling sure I'll see a supper meal before bedtime. Who has other bright ideas to add to things could put in for some variety?

The simplest field Texas field lunch I know consists of tacos de carne quisada. If there are some chiles verdes and frijoles refritos between the tortillas, so much the better. Generally, though, they keep well unrefrigerated and make a decent lunch when combined with other ingredients like fresh fruit. Final answer, Alex.

I usually pack sandwich or burritos consisting of egg, breakfast sausage, potato, rice, cheese, bean and avocado combinations.
Leftovers of fried chicken and battered deep fried potato logs and cornbread are always a treat.
Cracker, fish steaks, sardines and other canned staples are always in the truck for backup.

A navel orange, a couple handfuls of mixed nuts (unsalted, no peanuts) and water

I carry fruit and cheese sticks in the truck 'cause my wife thinks they're good for me. I usually sneak a cello of saltines and a couple of cans of VI-ennies..

And I have been known to drive a few miles out of my way for "truck stop" fried chicken and jalapenos. We all have our vices.

McWendy's King Burger and Pizza. Or even better is Mom 'N' Pop's cafe. Can't remember the last time we didn't run to town for lunch and some rest. Life's too short to be bustin' yer hump straight through without a decent break. If the boss demands that sort of thing, he wouldn't be my boss for very long. Ain't gonna happen.

Pb&j, if'n I'm gonna be in a spot where leaving doesn't make sense or doesn't sound better than staying.

Between having kids and joining the world of ultramarathons about a dozen years back or so, I came to realize both how easy and good a source of fuel they are.

Wasa bread. A whole grain Scandinavian cracker. Just about everything goes with them. Whenever I'm running short on time to put a lunch together, few of those crackers and a tin of kippers and I'm set. Some home smoked salmon and cream cheese with some thinly shaved red onion on a wasa cracker and I'm in heaven. Loads of fiber to keep a guy regular.
