See, If He'd Been Using his Garmin........

Leno, Letterman and others will love this

You know they will all use it in their monologues.

Not a very good investment.

That is a tragedy. Real shame. Can you imagine his apparent career as a fighter jet pilot, and now to run an electric buggy off a cliff? Arghhh.

Apparently it was a new off road model that he was testing on an off road trail.

I thought that I read in the past year that there was a multitude of law suits and recalls against the segway and that they were found to be unsafe in certain places.
They sure looked liked fun though.

Did not fail, he rode the thing until gravity took over. Why didn't he just step off, if it was out of control? Is there more to this than has been reported?

Much like you never jump out of a perfectly good airplane, you never jump off of a Segway.

A tragic accident.

I bought one a few years ago as a mobility aid for my spouse who has a disability. It worked very well for us until it was stolen from our garage two years later.

The thief would not be able to use it since the keys are magnetic and serialized to the machine. If someone ever tried to obtain new keys for the unit from Segway, I would have been notified. Alas, it never happened.

The worst part was that it was not covered by the insurance company. While the policy covered mobility aids, and Segways have been classified as mobility aids for the disabled, they ruled it was a 'motorized vehicle' like a scooter or a motorcycle and should have been insured separately. I never did get the loss covered.

Ah well, her disability has progressed to where she would have had a problem getting on and off the Segway now anyway.

Driven properly and with due attention to your path, they are quite safe. Like anything else though, I can imagine people getting too comfortable with them. I did see one other rider here using a cell phone while riding a Segway. No diiferent than using a cell while driving a car.
