I need some good ideas for a fellow surveyorsretirement gift. I am drawing a blank. He's not a big drinker so scotch is out....

Several boxes of flagging and FLO-Orange spray paint to keep his Christmas tree bright for years into the future.

My father, on Monday, retired from being the County Surveyor after 32 years. I bought him a new Browning A5 12 gauge for an upcoming dove hunt. Think firearms. 🙂

Get him a new cell phone with an unlisted number. Something tells me "retiring" as a 32 year veteran as County Surveyor won't be an easy task.

Rittenhouse compass.
Nice old transit, and tape, with 2 plumb bobs.
In a corner of his living room. With a light on it.

Maybe talk to imaudigger about his daughter's leather tooling talents.

Where did you find a new A5. They quit making them several years ago. I've got three, the newest one is nearly 40 years old.
Any

Or a gunter's chain instead of a tape.

They began production again in 2013 I think. We also have several older ones ranging from the pre 1930 to the Japanese made ones. They quit production I think in 2000 and kicked it back up.

The only thing like the old A5 is the hump back. The barrel doesn't go in with the spring anymore. Beautiful guns. Cabellas is your friend on this one. about 1.5k

Roger THAT!

I'm going to disconnect my land line, and get a CHEAP throw away cellphone (and NOT give the number to anybody but family).

John,

I was thinking more along the lines of RUNNING (like hell)!

But you are right, there is still too much that I like (and enjoy), to really give it up entirely.

The way I look at is that when I get to that point I can pick and choose who I want to work with (clients) and what jobs I want to do.

You'd think but I'm already up to my rear in plats and phone calls and it's only day 4. Did I mention they appointed me to take over his spot? 🙂

Then check out Simpson LTD if you have not already. I bought a new in box 1968 Wingmaster there for what I felt was a reasonable price.

They get some pretty unusual stuff in from time to time.
