Over the last couple of years, I've come to wear reading glasses more and more. With this most recent change of my contact lens prescription, I am most definitely wearing them more. For years I wore prescription glasses but my question is this.

How do my reading glasses get smudged/dirty so much faster than my prescription glasses ever did?

frequent changing and putting them either in your pocket or you have long eye lashes that are collecting and depositing gunk on your lenses... just a couple of possibilities.

OMG.?ÿ I'm suddenly much older than I was before reading this thread.

@squirl?ÿ?ÿ

Back when you were a Wildcat, did you have much contact with Mr. Smith the Vo-Ag teacher?

I get cheap reading glasses in packs of 3 at Ace Hardware and spread them around the house.

Also keep them in my briefcase and in my cruiser vest.

My distance vision has improved to the point where I donƒ??t need regular glasses anymore.?ÿ

Some, not a lot. He was always in the halls. I ran in to him just as much as the golf course. Lol

I'm opposite...I have worn glasses for distance needs since 7th grade. Now, I have to take my glasses off to read a book, total station screen, phone, etc. I am fine with not being able to see far away, just hate the close-up blurry BS...Getting old sucks.?ÿ

I have Keratoconus, so glasses donƒ??t help. ?ÿI have to wear hard contact lenses (Rigid Gas Permeable). ?ÿThey say this disease affects 1 in 500 or 2000, so who else here knows someone with KC?

I like to say it is contagious. ?ÿSo donƒ??t make direct eye contact with me. Look away.

Mine are in and out of the vest pocket continually. They get smudged pretty good.?ÿ Keeping a lens wipe around helps.

Don't need them to read the dc screen until I get outdoors. The TSC3 screen always seems to reflect the glare, no matter which direction I face.?ÿ ?????ÿ

In all the years in the field I never wore any type of UV protectant sun glasses, or for that matter, any glasses.?ÿ When I transitioned into office work, in my early to mid 30's I became far sighted and needed glasses or contacts.?ÿ Not long after, I needed bifocals.

Driving to work one day after just having turned 50, I noticed some haziness in the vision in my left eye.?ÿ When it didn't go away after a week, I went to the Doctor and he did an exam and found that I had cataracs in both eyes.

I got both natural lenses replaced with special lenses that fixed my far sightedness but required me to wear cheaters for very fine print.?ÿ I rarely have to use them and get them from the Dollar Store but now, my far sightedness has recently started to creep back in.

The joys of aging! LOL!?ÿ

Wear mine only for reading, which is far too much of my time anymore.?ÿ I can handle the computer screen without them.?ÿ But, switching back and forth between documents, drawings, etc. and the screen all the time keeps them on more than I would like.?ÿ No need for them while driving, as I can pick out a white-tail deer on the move long before anyone else riding with me.?ÿ Definitely needed for reading old deeds and such created prior to typewriters and copy machines.

The wife decided about 10 or 12 years ago that we should go to an optometrist just to find out if either of us might need glasses.?ÿ The guy she picked was someone who grew up a couple miles down the road from her childhood home, who happened to be in business not too far away.?ÿ We went.?ÿ We both came home with glasses.?ÿ The next year we went back and she came home with a different prescription while mine was fine.?ÿ Same thing happened the following year.?ÿ We switched to a different optometrist.?ÿ Neither of us has had a change in prescription since then.

After my cataract surgery, I had glasses with no far prescription and progressive bifocals. Just wear them all the time. They're great for computer work.

@mathteacher?ÿ

When I needed bifocals I went with progressive lenses.?ÿ The first week was pretty weird but now they seem natural.?ÿ I had hard-line bifocals as my safety glasses and didn't use them enough to ever feel comfortable with that split.

@brad-ott Yes, my mother had/has keratoconus. She finally had cornea transplants. I was very paranoid about developing it when I was in my 30s and 40s, but so far, so good.

@brad-ott I think so too! They went really well. I think an ophthalmologist at Ohio State did the work. By the time she had the transplants, she was seeing multiple images but because she could still read an eye chart, her ophthalmologist didn't want to approve her for surgery. She still has eye troubles but for other reasons (blepharospasm for some years, high myopia, cataracts). People comment on my myopia which is around -11 now. Hers was around -18 before her lens too were replaced.
