Since everybody is fiddling around searching for stuff to read, thought Id recount my past couple weeks.?ÿ
2 weeks ago, after a couple of sleepless nights in the recliner, went to the Dr. for the stabbing pain I was having in my back, right side about midway up. Couldn't get comfortable in any position, taking much more than a shallow breath felt like getting stabbed with an ice pick. Soreness had worked its way up over shoulder and started down right chest. Figured he was going to say it was a kidney stone or gall stone, but pee test didn't show anything. When he came back in he said he thought it might be a bulging disk pressing on a nerve. Ive had that before, same kind of pain in different spot. So he gave me a shot of cortisone and sent me to local hospital for chest xray to double check for something else. By the time I got done with the xray the pain was about gone. Had also written a prescription for prednisone and one for Percocet.?ÿ
When I stopped to pick those up, they said he was going to have to reauthorize the narcotic to something else, so I got prednisone and went home. No pain that night, so called Dr. next morning and told him to cancel the Percocet, besides I still had some from about a year ago I could use if needed.?ÿ
All was well until last Tuesday night when the pain in my back returned at a more intense level than before. About 4am I figured Id try the narcotics, and by 6:30 I felt better. Got up, took a shower, fixed breakfast, and about halfway thru I suddenly felt nauseated. I stepped out on the deck to get a breath of fresh air, and immediately had to puke over the rail into the shrubbery. I then discovered I couldnt move, not my head, not anything, without having to throw up. Finally got laid down on the deck and laid there for about an hour, until it started to sprinkle. ?ÿBack was still spasming if I moved. ?ÿ(As a side note, my wife was on a job in Michigan and the closest kid is 2 hours away).?ÿ
I managed to crawl back in the door, dry heaving in the process, and laid back down on the tile kitchen floor. Laid there for another hour until I finally was able to sit up. Couldnt hardly talk because every shallow breath would catch, that would cause me to cough, and coughing with a back problem is not pleasant. The ?ÿdoc, couldn't see me til 1:15. So I managed to get to the Lazy Boy and sit real still until then. Managed to get there, was somewhat more mobile by then. After he checked me out, he asked if I was by myself, then told me to get in the truck and drive straight to the emergency room at Baptist Health in Paducah, about an hour away. He mentioned that it sounded like I might be throwing blood clots. Got there at 2:30, they kept running tests, giving me morphine, which I never could tell had much affect on the pain, taking xrays, cat scans, ultrasounds, giving breathing treatments, until finally the cat scan showed a blood clot in my right lung. Ultrasound found one in my left leg where it probably came from. No idea how that got there, they said it was too long since hip surgery for that to be the cause, havent had any injury, havent been on an airplane or sat on a long trip, nothing. So they started me on blood thinner and finally Friday morning the back pain suddenly went away. Sent me home taking Eliquis, no restrictions, feel fine now. Went in to work today, but not much going on because of weather, going to work from home the rest of the week. At least it wasnt the coronavirus.?ÿ
Yikes. ?ÿHow young are you?
Glad you're OK, you're lucky.?ÿ Stick with the Eliquis for a while.
Man, oh, man!?ÿ That sucks!
Glad they finally figured out what was going on.?ÿ Cannot imagine the helpless feeling while on the deck or on the house floor.?ÿ I probably would have gone into a full blown panic attack which would have only made the real problem much worse.
At least it wasnt the coronavirus.
You would have been luckier if you did have the coronavirus!?ÿ I used to watch Dr. G, Medical Examiner.?ÿ Every so often she'd have a case where the person died of pulmonary emboli.?ÿ Her standard response, "[They] are incompatible with life!"
I've somehow managed to survive two DVTs (one in each leg) with pulmonary emboli both times.?ÿ The first was in 1998 and the second was a year ago January. The last time, I only had a naggy ache in my calf.?ÿ I went to the doctor and when she saw my O2% was in the mid 80s I was sent to the ER for a CAT scan.?ÿ I then got a wheel chair ride to my hospital bed.
The clot in my calf has finally dissolved to the point where I can control the leg edema by elevating it for an hour or so two to three times a day.?ÿ These would otherwise be called random old man naps scattered as they are through the day.
Hopefully, your doctor has you wearing support hose, Tubi-Grips or something similar to help control and mitigate the swelling in your leg.?ÿ I've had a Dickens of a time sitting in front of my computer to do CAD work this last year.?ÿ I spent nearly a week preparing for and giving a conference talk last month where I was up on my feet all the time.?ÿ It took over a week of rest to get things back to "normal."?ÿ And now that I'm ready to go out and do things, everything is shuttered up.
I guess I'm saying this to caution you to be CAREFUL, esp. the next few months while your body reabsorbs the clot.?ÿ Don't stand or sit for too long.?ÿ Those PEs will drop you quickly and permanently; just ask Dan Blocker's family.
Anyway, all my best on a complete recovery.?ÿ REST is your friend eddy.?ÿ Since this is my second the doctor says I'll be on a blood thinner (Pradaxa) for the remainder of my existence.?ÿ Trust me, you don't want another one.?ÿ
Odd thing is I have no pain, bruising, or swelling in the leg. I vaguely remember a few months ago telling my wife I had a leg ache like I used to have all the time when I was a kid. Dont remember it being as a result of anything, it may not have even been that leg. Im 62, still have the occasional charlie horse that rolls me out of the bed in pain, but a dose of pickle juice usually prevents that if I feel one coming on.
Holy Smokes! Glad you're doing better and found the problem. Must have been an eye opening experience.
You spend 2 hours immobile on the floor, then several more immobile in a chair. The doc then has you driving yourself to a hospital an hour away. Ummmm......?ÿ I think you need a new doc.
He knew I would get there a lot quicker than having to wait on an ambulance I imagine.
If you got there at all. A person with the symptoms you described shouldn't be allowed out of the parking lot.
@norman-oklahoma :silly:
As Ive asked a few people who were trying to tell me how to survey, what state are you licensed (as a dr) in?
Holy crap!!! 😯 ?ÿ
We are so glad you are OK and appreciate you taking the time out to update all of us about what happened.
Hopefully you are 100% healed up now!! ?????ÿ
