Just received an email from POB that the site is shutting down the RPLS Network as of December 31st.?ÿ ?ÿNot surprised.... the site was never the same after the takeover.?ÿ ?ÿSO GLAD Wendell started this site.?ÿ ?ÿMaybe we can encourage the few leftover members to come over here.

It would be good to post a message over there reminding everyone of where the action really is.?ÿ Since they are closing down, I would think bnp shouldn't mind.?ÿ I tried to log in to the other forum just now and got error messages instead of the login form.?ÿ?ÿ

I think Keith was banned on this forum, but not sure if he has amnesty by now.

There have been many new faces passing thru their list of people in charge of the publication and it has gong thru some name changes.

On the other hand, Keith's steady line of chat has remained the same.

His shoes should be standing in the office of whoever can have a conversation on record about what he considers.

When I moved the forum to the latest format (for the upteenth time), I actually unbanned those who were previously valued users (until they lost their minds). The conversion allowed me an easy way to change a bunch of folks at once to "regular" users, not on the banned list, so I did it. A couple of them did come on over after that and were subsequently banned again upon posting diatribes and hateful messages. I can tell you that I am SO glad they aren't a part of this forum any longer, since Rule #1 is "Be Nice" and they can't seem to follow it. I really want to keep the doors open for everyone, but some of them just make their own bed and apparently don't have the self-control to maintain a peaceful and useful discussion. In many cases, they further prove my case after being banned because they send me some nastygrams via email. There was a time when it bothered me, but now I find myself laughing my ass off about it. The best thing I ever did in regards to managing this forum was to get a bit friendlier with the ban button. It has given me peace of mind and seems to have made the forum a much nice place to be overall.

Now, with that all said, I just want to say I truly appreciate the camaraderie we have here. Just last week, my wife and I vacationed on Kaua'i and we got to meet @yswami in person -- how cool is that? I just wish I could travel around and meet everyone. That would be a blast.

I remember one of my elementary school teachers warning us, "Don't be passing notes around, if you don't want to hear them read aloud to the whole class." How about adding a page called "Best of the nastygrams" ?

Maybe leave off the authors' names, just to avoid stirring the pot, too much.

End of an era after a long slow death!

There was lots of good stuff over there back in the day, just went over and looked around, searched on my name and found some old memories, Mr. G. was in some of them, had totally forgot about that name, of course saw posts from a few friends who are no longer with us such as Larry and Eric, good memories! Time only marches forward though!

I got signed in over there and replied to the announcement thread with a link to here.?ÿ There are a (very) few who might make the migration.

The strange thing is that I still can't log in there with a recent version of Firefox, but was able to use the XP machine and older Firefox with no trouble.

Life goes on.?ÿ

I do remember when the folks at POB made some radical changes to their old message board...and in my opinion, inadvertently destroyed the unique camaraderie we all enjoyed and?ÿshared?ÿon their site.?ÿ I will always be grateful to Wendell and Co. for having the time and fortitude to "dumpster dive" and retrieve the discarded?ÿessence of the old board.?ÿ He fanned the embers and gave us?ÿour current home.?ÿ Thank you, Wendell et ux.?ÿ

I also remember talking to?ÿa friend and fellow Oklahoma surveyor, Mark Deal,?ÿabout his original RPLS.com message board before he sold the site to POB.?ÿ?ÿThose were the days.

https://www.pobonline.com/articles/87383-a-tribute-to-mark-deal

I spoke many times with Mark about his creation and the need he saw for us all to "talk more".?ÿ Mark not only saw the relevance of sharing?ÿwith each other our technical knowledge and experiences, he also saw the need for levity and a chance for us all to respectfully laugh at ourselves and our friends.?ÿ I'm pretty sure if Mark were still with us he'd be a regular here on Wendell's site?ÿand maybe not so much the other place.?ÿ We'll never be able to ask him...but?ÿthat's my guess.

And I'm a really good guesser.

We don't want it to end here.
