If it's a good chair I recommend duct tape....

My current Office Chair will be 10 years old in February.

Still solid, but it does have some Duck Tape on the right-hand arm rest.

It was fairly cheap (Office Max I think), but I figure I'll get another 5 years out of it.

I am looking forward to some good suggestions. My back complains when I sit at my desk for very long, even only an hour or so.

You can't beat a Herman Miller Aeron chair, they aren't cheap, though.

Here's what I sit on for the best part of the day, unless I need to burn some fossil fuel:

It's probably 75 years old (I've had it 25) and is the most comfortable chair I've found. I have a plethora of the upholstered variety found at the office supply and they're ok....but they don't last but 5 or 6 years before we throw them out. And my oak chair is fart-resistant...something you need to consider when purchasing a chair. (I don't think anybody makes one with charcoal filter built into the padding, but it's not a bad idea...)

+1 on the herman miller aeron chair. Not cheap but going on 15 years. (Mesh on the seat so it is fart resistant, more or less).

Sorry you lost your arm. Hope it wasn't your writing/typing/texting arm.

I can understand why you would want a different style of chair, now that you don't have a need for an arm rest on that side.

My wife complains when she comes into my room, sits in my chair, and all the loaded "air" comes out......

I was in a couple second hand office furniture stores last month looking for file cabinets.

I was amazed at the number of office chairs they have... styles and sizes and colors that I never imagined... boat loads of them, much more than any other type of item.

Dirt Cheap!!!

The last one I bought - and it wasn't cheap - had plastic sockets for the wheels on the base - it didn't last two years.

Edit - After looking at the Herman Miller Aeron chairs, yes it was cheap.

Chairs are a bit like shoes. You can get reasonably priced ones that will look sharp for a while and then go to crap or you can spend far too much and get something that will last too long.

Years ago a coworker with scuffed shoes was explaining how expensive they had been to purchase something like five years earlier, but they were still doing the job. I told him I didn't mind buying a new pair every year for one-fifth of what he was paying because they kept looking good for about a year. That way I had nice looking shoes all the time, while his were only nice looking for about the first year or so. He wasn't going to change his ways and neither was I.

That's a good question, Warren. :-D:-D:-D:-D:-D

Cows are a bit picky about the leather used to make their shoes.

Got mine at Staples short term sale a couple years ago. Pd about $220 each. Glad I did, still in good shape.

Got one 100yds from my house. Any time I need a chair I can pick from hundreds that are quite literally piled up to the rafters. Easiest to find one that looks like it will come out without collapsing the pile!

They do office clearances but it costs a lot to dispose in landfill now.

I like a chair without wheels or other mechanical fixtures.
