The camera caught this critter at 2:34am on my patio in Tucson. I was thinking raccoon but the shadow doesn't seem to match. It walked awkwardly, and it didn't climb very well.
Any ideas? I figure with the diverse knowledge on this board someone knows for sure.
Do you have armadillos in AZ. That what it looks like to me. Second guess would be a possum.
Possum.
Nutria?
USGS habitat map says there are some in Southeastern Aridzona. Perhaps they hitched a ride to a nearby canal.
Baby Chupacabra....;-)
The critter looks like an opossum, the shadow looks like a cat sized rat.
motion detector camera?
Wife had her bike stolen from the carport, they caught the culprit who's now facing 5 to 10 for a series of burglaries in the area after he was caught selling chainsaws, bikes, etc on craigslist. But now I am installing Motion detecting cameras on the property 🙁
My vote is for opossum. I've been told "we don't have opossum here in Arizona", but I've seen several in the Huachuca Mtns.
My eyeballs translate that blur as a Possum.
"Granny Clampet" (Daisy) could tell you in a heartbeat!;-)
Have a great weekend.
It's on a pole; must be a polecat
Otherwise known as a possum.
ditto on the opposum.
Note the thin, spindly tail.
ditto on Opossum. I copied the photo and tried to do some zooming and contrast. Didn't work but the shadow was the tell tail sign. We have them everywhere round here.
Gotta be a possum. They climb, armydildos do not climb. (they usually sit around and get promoted.)
I saw one here in the City, it looked like a racoon with a rat's tail. Scared the sheet out of me.

Who would have thought?
CPDent, I Like your choice of words/spelling.
Better video this morning of the opossum on the patio, exact same time, so he must be following a regular route. Again trying to find a way up on the roof, and I suspect trying to get in the house. Can you imagine the commotion with the Beagle if he got through the doggy door and couldn't get back out quickly. That would scare the crap out of us at 2 a.m.
Funny that you mentioned a Beagle, I came home the other day to my wife yelling at me that our Beagle had cornered an opossum in the back yard. She and my daughter would not let me kill it though. I called a trapper friend and he said that I should stick a $50 to it and maybe someone would come and get the opossum.
Koala bear escaped from the zoo.
BTW, she was not Granny Clampett. She was Jed's mother-in-law. She was Daisy Moses. Grandma Moses if you prefer. That very detail came to light in one episode where some dummy thought she was THE Grandma Moses.
