I know that some of you (W, et al) have had bad experiences in the past with Dell. To date mine have been fine so last week when my desktop died I replaced it with a Dell laptop which arrived on Friday. Today I am starting to fear the worst. It is running a 3 hour self diagnostic test today, ugh.

I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you might have for me. Also, feel free to share your Dell happy/horror stories.

The dude abides.

I'd be on the horn with Dell demanding a replacement. It is fairly common for hardware failures to occur within the first few hours of operation.

I had no idea Dell was still around. But then again, I don't get out much anymore.

I outfitted my office with Dell hardware in 2003 (or '04...). The nine months I kept all their junk (with the almost child like misconception that it all would someday work right) almost put me out of business.

Sorry to add this to the post, but the trouble I incurred with their equipment was unimaginable.

Dell had a period of time - post c.2002 - when their quality and service declined and their reputation suffered. Michael Dell returned to a more active role and seems to have mostly fixed those problems. I've had a couple of Dells and the experience has been good.

I love my Dell Precision 6700 laptop with Quadro K5000m graphics card and 32 gigs ram. Haven't been happier with a computer ever.

I've been using Dell Precision workstations for about 9 years now. I'm on my third one -- a T7500 -- and it's still going strong after almost 6 years. I did put a couple of new disks in it about a year ago, but only because I decided to go with a RAID1 setup instead of a single spindle.

I also have a Dell D610 Latitude laptop that's 10 years old. It's nothing special, but it still works.

Dell used to be very good but it seems like they've cheaper out. You can still get a nicely confined Dell, but it will cost you $$$ and it's not a bad idea to buy their extended warranty & service if you run a business. But for my next computer, I'm going to take a very hard look at Asus. They used to just make motherboards, and very good motherboards at that. Then they got into the building of whole computers and I like what I see. They seem to use quality parts and complaints seem to be much less compared to Dell.

I agree, get it replaced asap... or better yet get a full refund and buy from someone else.

Back in 2005+/- I worked for a firm that was 100% Dell. They ordered 3 or 4 hotrod workstations, all at the same time, same spec. (as in the order form had "quantity: 4").
A couple months later the IT guys wanted to add some ram, or network cards, something simple. it was like opening up one of those grab bags at a church bazaar, that was inside was a big surprise. They were a hodgepodge of parts, different makers, different models, etc. Not "bad" hardware, and it did meet the spec. of what they said for the computer, but just a bunch of odd ball crud.
Would I buy Dell? Nope!

Very few makers actually make much of the stuff that they put in the box. They are resellers.

If you want to get better quality Shop Local. A local shop can purchase all the parts you want, and put them in the box, and make it work. They can also install All of your software. And if you want to do a bit of research you could even spec the exact mobo, ps, drives, video card, etc. Price? same or less than those big box stores like HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.

It's funny how people have different experiences with different hardware. I have an 12 year old Dell desktop that still works and had a laptop that lasted about 8 years. I have a Toshiba laptop that is rock solid. My sons Lenovo lasted less than 12 months.

Our experience in general has been that the FirePro's are better for GPU intensive rendering, that some 3D programs like Maya need, but that the Quadro's are more of a CAD workhorse. If I were doing just CAD, I'd choose the M3000M.

It's a very complicated case Brad. You know, a lotta ins, a lotta outs, lotta what-have-yous.

Humor aside, I think it depends on whether you plan to process any point clouds or if you're just gonna be working with CAD. I agree with what rfc said, and would just add that if you plan to process scan data get the very best card you can afford.

Our Office is a Dell Office. We have about 300 dell computers in this location. We keep 3 IT guys going all the time updating and fixing stuff. They have a 3 year warranty on the computers and replace them when they go out of warranty. I have personally purchased 2 refurbished Dell Lap Top computers. The first one was a Pentium and the second one is about 10 years old now. They both still work pretty good for their age. The issue with the newest one is the hard drives are almost full. It is an Inspron 720 with 2 160 Gb hard drives, 17" display and an Nvidia Graphics card. When it started running out of hard drive space and I did not want to invest the $ in replacing the hard drive on a computer that old think it would develop other problems so I just moved a lot of pictures and music to an external hard drive and continued on. When I need to work from home, I have to have my work computer to access the network. I am about to by a new laptop for my wife. Her 6 year old HP has a bad monitor. She wants another HP so that is what I will get her. We got her a HP because she was starting graduate school and needed her own computer to take online classes and we did not have time to wait for a Dell. When I replace my Inspron 720, I plan to get another Refurbished Dell.
