I had no idea surveying here in this heavy brush and rugged terrain would be so physically demanding.?ÿ I'm starting to think I may not be suited to move ahead with this...
I worked for an outfit once that relied heavily on golf course design.?ÿ It wasn't bad work but we had to schedule our time out on the course so we wouldn't interrupt any old duffers.
The one thing that would most certainly fill one of us with fear...to hear that deadly "chink" as an automatic sprinkler came on and destroyed the instrument and soaked us all. 😉
@paden-cash I got hosed (showered) that day with one of their industrial strength heads.?ÿ I laid a Trimble pelican case in front of it hoping that would shade me for a turn or two... rough work
@dave-o?ÿ
Those things will take hide off of you if you're within 50' of them.
Save that job for mid-Winter.?ÿ Fewer duffers and no sprinklers.
Surveyed a golf course for a proposed residential subdivision.?ÿ Never happened.
Confirmed the distance from tee to hole on a nine-hole sand greens course.
"We" sponsored a hole at a golf tournament once and I got to operate the total station to measure the longest drive.
I once took a helicopter ride with Pete Dye, the acclaimed golf course architect during one of his inspections of the course construction at Oak Tree in Edmond, OK.?ÿ Mr. Dye couldn't understand a drainage issue that was making it difficult to build the course as he wanted.?ÿ We hopped in the 'copter that had brought him to the site.?ÿ Once I could show him what was going on he agreed and made some changes.
He asked me if I played golf.?ÿ I told him "not at all".?ÿ He asked me if being the project surveyor and not knowing anything about golf might be a drawback.?ÿ I was merely trying to answer his question when I told him "I guess that's why they had hired him".
He got a good laugh out of it.

I laid out a subdivision/golf course in Papillion NE; designed by Arnold Palmer. I got to meet him. Tara Hills
Nice guy...
Some pretty soft breaks there.
Had a chance to layout Whistling Straights. The guy wanted a crew on site 24/7. Seems he would wake up with an idea and wake the crew to stake it out. They had a condo on site for the crew. I guess he would build his idea, then look at it and if he didn't like doze it and start over. Didn't get the job, thankfully, as I don't know squat about golf. That could have been kind of embarrassing.?ÿ

@holy-cow this is a private, Jack Nicklaus course about 15 years old inside of a secure (beautiful) subdivision on the west side (dry side) of Big Island, HI so there's no winter here 🙂 but no duffers either as it's under renovation for a few months.?ÿ The subdivision GM asked me if I could "get the 2d and 3d surface areas" of the completed bunkers because the bunker renovation contractor is submitting change orders for additional material needed due to the difference - apparently implying that the dramatic shaping of the bunkers exceeded the standard +8% surface area estimate for additional material.?ÿ I made a really pretty picture for them showing that most are in the +2-3% range with a couple just over 6%.?ÿ I feel like a weapon manufacturer...?ÿ
@squirl I took my personal longest foresight out there on this one - 2127'.?ÿ I know, nothin compared to what most of you guys have done.
@dave-o?ÿ
Pointed the gun low on the western horizon, strapped a prism to my butt and recorded around 24,000 miles (plus or minus 0.04').

I've spent too much time around Texans.

@holy-cow unfortunately, now that visual is stuck in my head...
@dave-o?ÿ
You work on the Big Island?? How come we didn't meet up with you when we were there?? ?????ÿ
Guess we'll have too see ya on our next trip there!
That spot you are at...looks really familiar. Close to Kukio Beach?? ????

Company I worked for in the 1980s did a golf course job. All I remember is they wanted a t post at each tee and at each hole. They eyeballed all the rest.
