I had to go into town yesterday and look for something at Lowe's and when I was leaving out the back way from the store I got a call and pulled over to take it. Well the back way out of Lowes is a heavily travelled route and in front of me was another stopped car with the trunk up and woman moving frantically. I watched her while I took my call.
She pulled a wheel chair out of the trunk and proceeded to drag "grandpa" out of the back and set him down in the wheel chair. I watched this wondering what is going on and this woman wrapped a blanket around "grandpa" and stuck a "need money" sign in his hand and a bucket in his lap and drove a couple of hundred yards away to Checkers.
Capitalism is alive and well with the exploitation of the elderly.
Probably not a relative but "someone" she borrowed from an old folks home.
used to have a job where i'd pass a guy every morning at the same intersection, holding the same sign.?ÿ except i always wondered how a homeless dude- presumably without a car- lived and/or got out there.?ÿ it wasn't anywhere hospitable to foot traffic, living outdoors, or buying a can of beans.
few weeks go by and one morning i snap to the fact that the shiny jeep cherokee that broke down over on the side of the hill sure didn't seem to be missed by its owner(s)...
I've seen things like this many times since moving to Austin. I've seen a small van/SUV "drop off" people to their prospective corners. Later in the day, I've seen that same van/SUV picking those same people up.
Years ago, I was approached by a panhandler at the intersection of Lamar and 5th in downtown Austin. He said, "I'm going to be straight with you. I'm from Vegas and I need a drink. What time do the liquor stores open here?"

my favorites are the cats who don't remember the last time they asked you.?ÿ had a dude ask me to buy him a cheeseburger at the downtown p. terry's a couple years back.?ÿ he got me on a good day.?ÿ i walked back up to the counter "gimme a cheeseburger, all the way."?ÿ suddenly, from over my shoulder, comes this voice behind the snot and dragon breath: "hold the ketchup."?ÿ all i could think was "this motherfu..."?ÿ handed him the receipt and walked away.
2, maybe 3 months later i'm walking back to the office from same said p. terry's, eating my burger on the stroll and i hear somebody ask: "hey- wanna share that burger?"?ÿ first thought was "share?"?ÿ then i turned and looked and saw that it was mr. no-ketchup.?ÿ now, normally i'm always extremely NOT-A-DICK when i decline the solicitations of bums.?ÿ but this guy got the earful i reckon i'd saved up for a while.
then there's blind nathan...
Well, at least she didn't dump him off at race track with a bag of diapers and a note pinned to him. She's got that going for her.

My wife serves on the board of directors of a local nonprofit that runs a cold weather shelter in the winter (duh) and works year round with the homeless to get them off the street and into housing. One of their programs is assigning mentors to people recently off the street to get them acclimated to normal day to day life. ?ÿ
This is the backstory of the woman she is working with now. ?ÿShe's in her late 50's and, if I had to guess, using the old IQ range charts she's borderline impaired. She hasn't ?ÿworked in decades and lived with her longtime partner in a rented trailer on a farm in Delaware where he was a farm hand. He passed away last spring and she came to live with her son here about 20 miles outside of town here in Maryland. ?ÿThe last week of October, the day the shelter opened, he drove her into town and dropped her off there with a garbage bag of clothes. Luckily they found her a spot in what amounts to a boarding house run specifically for women in similar straits after only a few months in the shelter at night and on the street during the day ?ÿ

Personally I'd like to form a volunteer organization that gets a group of local menfolk together to publicly horse whip her son; but alas those days are behind us. ?ÿ

While?ÿthe aged concept of Posse Comitatus is rarely utilized nowadays, it is still based in legality here in the U.S.?ÿ?ÿ Deputization of a posse must be performed by some level of law enforcement to suppress an illegal act to or against the public well-being.?ÿ
And there's the fly-in-the-ointment for publicly whipping the woman's son...while cruel and ignorant, he probably didn't break the law.?ÿ?ÿ If stupidity?ÿWERE a crime in the U.S. I figger 'bout half the people I run into daily would be behind bars...or hopefully at least horse-whipped....

Her son may be a dick, but he didn't get that way all by himself.?ÿ I wonder what kind of a mom she was.

Poor fellow was probably happy to get out of jail.
