Sitting with SWMBO at a local establishment having dinner and a family behind us left and a new one took their place, they had a maybe 4-5 month old girl and put her in a high chair just behind SWMBO.
I noticed that her ears were pierced and she had little diamond studs. I didn't tell SWMBO, I didn't want the reaction it probably would have caused. I've also heard (but not seen) of toddlers with actual tattoos. 🙁
I guess I'm just an old curmudgeon at this point, but something seems wrong with these trends.
Self mutilation is not only common in our society, but considered attractive by a number of folks. I guess there's a moral question as to whether physically mutilating a child is right or wrong. Personally, I don't care for it.
Maybe when the child reaches majority she will sue her parents for the cost of reconstructive surgery. Plus a jillion in punitive damages. :pinch:

Couldn't agree more. But, I had the identical thoughts when I was just a young curmudgeon. This is one more on a long list of ways so-called parents abuse their children.
Name your daughter Peekaboo or your son Afternoon Delight. Then wonder why their pictures are hanging on the wall down at the Post Office.
And here I thought ....
I was the only curmudgeon on this site! 🙂
You should visit some other places in the world where the Puritan ethic has not affected people...
And here I thought ....
Though I don't show it on this site, I'll match my "curmudgeness" against most anybody's :-O

Man, ain't we the Main St. "domino bench" this morning!
Had a young lady cashier at Walgreen's TALK A LITTLE LOUDER to me when I stepped up to the register. Guess she thought all old folks are hard of hearing..
So I returned the favor AND TALKED REAL LOUD RIGHT BACK AT HER. I think she thought I was crazy. I thought it was funny. 😉
And here I thought ....
those young people are always mumbling, they need to SPEAK UP, I CAN HARDLY HEAR YOU!! It surely can't be me
SWMBO and I debated over earrings for our daughter. She is still without at age 5. Now they can be a special present without one more toy taking up space.
My wife had pierced ears as a youngster.
She was playing on the floor with a puppy, her earrings got caught in the carpet and when she pulled her head up she ripped her ear lobes open.
She can barely talk about now, even after all these years.
I guess I'm old fashioned, but I don't think a young lady should get her ears pierced until she appreciates what an infection is and can take care of it. And there is no set age here - it depends on the maturity of the girl.
mumbling ....
I guess I can tolerate the mumbling. I've learned to read lips over the years.;-)
but...whatlikereallyyouknowgetsme isyoungfolksthattotally talktoofasttoevenunderstandyouknow..
Like it's some sort of damn contest to see how many words you can spit out in one breath. I'm always asking them to "slow down and breath"...
Bingo. Every one of my kids has hit milestones at a different age. None of them got pierced ears until they showed they were ready. There is no magic age but toddler certainly isn't gonna happen in my house...
mumbling ....
LOL, it couldn't be the brain processor slowing down, I have the same issue, mostly with females, but dang if they can't process it.
From what I have observed, it is a custom among Hispanic peoples and some Mediterranean cultures. My daughters had their ears pierced when they were teenagers.
YMMV.
And here I thought ....
You must look like you should be hard of hearing....when you go get a hair cut, do they trim as much hair out of your ears and off your eyebrows than they do off your head?
I have always felt it was polite to speak up when speaking to "older" folks. I don't know very many that do not have some sort of hearing loss due to military service or just normal things that damage your hearing (shooting guns, working around machinery/equipment).
Many older people get real good at pretending to understand what somebody is saying and it's hard to figure out exactly how loud you need to speak.
We waited until my daughter was old enough to make her own decision - and she wasn't in a hurry. I think she was a little scared.
Problem is, they have to be continually worn, or the holes grow shut. I can't even imagine adding ANOTHER thing to worry about with little kids.
As Cliff said it may also be cultural.
IN NJ it is common and I actually laughed at the original post.
It would not raise an eyebrow here, never.
That being said, I waited until I was 20 to pierce an ear (1970) and I never heard the end of it from my folks!
Just curious...
If you have male children did you have them circumcised as infants, or did you wait until they were old enough to make the decision?
Just curious...
mmmmmm, well I could tell you but that's a bit personal for my male children, no matter which I chose;-)
And I understand your point.
