Hard to believe anything is more deadly than a snake.?ÿ But, I can believe it.?ÿ Based on too much experience.

I dated a gal for a few months once.?ÿ Her best friend warned me that this woman was the classic case of PMS, so to abandon ship at the first signs.?ÿ By golly, she was correct.?ÿ The closest thing to the Linda Blair head-spinning and pea soup-spewing in The Exorcist I have ever encountered.?ÿ That made moving on an easy thought.

Good thing we don't live in Central America...

Some species of snakes will actively ƒ??chaseƒ? human beings, such as the?ÿCentral American bushmaster (Lachesis muta muta). An enormous and lethally venomous serpent, the bushmaster is well-known for this behavior.

?ÿ

I always thought Cottonmouth's and Water Moccasin's were aggressive, but Google says that's a myth

A blue racer will chase you to the house and get there ahead of you.

I still follow my Dad's advice.... Walk heavily and cut brush loudly.?ÿ

That'll give the momma bear a chance to shoo her cubs away before you get too close, as well.

Several years ago I was burning dead grass in a waterway behind a pond to kill off weeds and tree sprouts.?ÿ Suddenly, a blue snake literally shot out of the grass, skimmed on the top of it and went past me before I had time to react.?ÿ If it had wanted to attack me, it would have achieved its goal quite easily.?ÿ Just a reminder of how fast things can happen in nature.

Cottonmouths seem to act agressivly most of the time, while rattlesnakes will agreess some of the time. Or maybe I just smell like them.?ÿ

I have a few stories about rattlers, but for this thread I'll keep it to my one story concerning a Timber Rattlesnake.

A little over 50 years ago I got a summer job at a tourist "attraction" in the Black Hills. My job was to enthrall the visitors with my milking and wrasslin' skills in between giving tours at the herpetarium. I was introduced to the assistant curator of the herpetarium on my second day and he wanted to ease my anxiety with handling Western Diamondbacks so he brought out a bucket and poured the contents out onto the floor.

The snake that plopped out was a beautiful 4-foot Timber Rattlesnake. I was told that they are fairly docile and a bit on the lethargic side. All I knew at the time was that he looked peeved at being dropped on the floor. Back in 1972 the term [animal] whisperer hadn't made it to the lexicon, but the curator was a real snake whisperer. He agilely kept the snake between us with a snake hook and within a minute the snake stopped his fidgeting.

He then laid the snake hook down and grasped the snake's tail with one hand. It seemed miraculous at the time, but the snake remained calm. What happened next was eerie. The man slowly pulled the snake towards him with one hand while the other slid along the snake's belly. He continued this until the snake's head was about 6" from his hands. He then deftly grabbed the head and pronounced, "now see how easy that was."

Although I was offered the opportunity to try it myself, I declined. Early the next day, the owner of the Reptile Gardens showed me how to "milk" a Western Diamondback and then pronounced that I would be the victim snake handler at the next rattlesnake milking show in 15 minutes. All I remember from my first rattlesnake milking was that my knees were beyond just shaking. My voice was trembling as I made it through my speech so when it came time for questions the first one was how long had I been doing this? My answer of it being my first was met with several gasps from the audience (likely all were Kansans from reading HC's issues with snakes).

Ah, the good old days!!!

Not a myth...I've had water moccasin's chase me when shooting x-sections of a ditch in Memphis.?ÿ Luck for me, I could smell them before I laid eyes on them, so I was at least, on alert.

@kevin-hines?ÿ

I agree, Google did say; they don't like people around there nests.

We had a swimming hole: Merritt's Beach near Plattsmouth NE. They had a nice, white sand beach on one side, the far side was grass bank hanging over the water.

Several people, over the years died from Cottonmouth attacks...

Water snakes are cantankerous.?ÿ They will whap you pretty good, given the opportunity.?ÿ Twice, when I was a youngster strolling along the edge of our big pond, I had the misfortune of being struck on my little kid's boot by a nasty water snake.?ÿ Didn't matter what his specific ancestry may have been, he was going to get him some tender little white boy ankle.?ÿ Somewhere out about Pluto there are the remnants of my screams for the Plutonians to attempt to decipher.

Meanest snake I've ever encountered (besides SWMBO, oh jesus that was a mistake) is a garter snake, they start striking/biting the second they see you. ?????ÿ

@dougie tell google to go down to Mississippi during mating season. They will come across a pond with head raised ready to strike as they slither toward you and your fishing pole. Most of the time they are not. But during the season of love they get aggressive as heck.

@kevin-hines yes sir Memphis TN I grew up in north ms from there. And I know you are telling the truth because they have a unique smell for sure. Before the wolf chase mall I surveyed all that darn wolf river bottom years ago. Up towards Collierville as well. I use to grapple up and down those bottoms for catfish. Now i am older and smart enough to be scared lol.
