How to block Windows 10 upgrades - Many solutions!
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/windows-10-block-upgrade.html
I used the "stop-win-10" link that Wendell recommended in one of the 'woke up to win 10' threads from a couple weeks ago.
Worked just dandy (removed 5.5 gig of unknown).
Thanks all.
I too resisted the upgrade, one day it was just mysteriously upgraded, after getting over initial oh s*** moment I embraced, changed some settings as Wendel suggested and haven't looked back. In fact I can't remember what was so good about all those previous versions 🙂 Had to do a hack to get my old printer driver going, BUT that was about it, I don't think it has crashed once in many months, is faster, etc. I wouldn't be too afraid to upgrade, of course YMMV depending on what older hardware you need to make work.

I just got bit by the "automatic upgrade" thing. My backup system with Windows 7 had been off for several weeks, and when I turned it on today to plot a drawing (my main system won't talk to my plotter due to lack of a Win10 driver) I found that it was running Win10. It's going through the reversion process as I type.
I can't say I wasn't warned, I was just too lazy to take preventive measures. I'm hoping the Win7 plotter driver still works!
I believe I disable the Windows 10 update from Windows previously and had no GWX subfolder under Windows, but found GWX.exe still running under TaskManager.
I did some searching and found this website:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351
Followed the instructions for preventing an OS upgrade using the registry method,
Windows registry
Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
To block the upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update, specify the following registry value:
Subkey: HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1
then followed the instructions for removing the Update Windows icon in the system tray also by using the registry method
Windows registry

For non-Enterprise versions of Windows, the notification icon can be suppressed through the Windows registry. To do this, set the following registry value:
Subkey: HKLMSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsGwx
DWORD value: DisableGwx = 1.
For both, I had to add first the key (WindowsUpdate and Gwx), and then DWORD value for each. The icon in the system try disappeared immediately so I hope I stopped the upgrade permanently. I guess I'll keep the instructions in case I ever decide I need to do the upgrade.
The question for me is now: After reverting to Win7, will MS still try to upgrade the machine to Win10?
I did it. I upgraded to Windows 10. We'll see. I do not like spyware.....
Over the past week or so, I have been investigating new computers (laptops specifically) online. Turns out that there are a couple manufactures who still offer computers with Windows 7 "downgrade" on some of their models: HP and Toshiba are the ones I found. Available on their custom built machines.
Windows 7 Retail (one station, transferable) sells for about $50 on eBay.
OEM version is a bit less, but it gets locked into the first computer it is installed on.
OK super busy, started researching this but didn't find a clear answer.
Can we 'reserve' a copy of Win10 for the win 7 machines, and then NOT download or install it until later?
Doesn't Microsoft understand that survey companies can't be messing with computers in July? 🙂
I would like to defer the install until I am 100% sure it will be OK with what I have here in the office, otherwise I will risk the cost to upgrade, if I really want to later.
One consideration regarding upgrades to Windows 10 is that the "Anniversary Update" is set to release on August 2nd. As a Windows Insider, I can tell you that they've made a crap-ton of improvements and bug fixes. Overall, it seems faster and more stable.
PROBLEM!! File explorer stopped working. Any suggestions?

Not to hijack, but I used a method discussed on here earlier to block W10, but now have my software updated to the point that I think all will run in W10 and have forgotten how to unblock it.

file explorer icons don't work. workaround: right click on the windows icon lower left screen. then click "file explorer."
annoying......still learning the quirks of windows 10.
okay, i'm in. there's a red wire, a green wire, and a blue wire...o_O
From what I can see it was super simple to get rid of kb3035583, the rest not really. my virus protection was letting the GWX right by it, moving it to the trusted group. Probably need to re-read the instructions here.
You can delete the registry entries in my previous post, but I don't know how to get GWX.exe or the GWX folder back. Perhaps downloading the kb3035583 update and installing it will work. Also, the kbxxxxx664 or or 644 which is implicated in the WIN10 upgrade may help. I've disabled both and hidden the updates.
I decided to upgrade my personal pc, but then the "free" version timed out Friday night. Oops. However, it turns out that you can still get a free upgrade if you state that you're using accessibility options. Because my mom uses them when she visits me, I guess my pc qualifies!
Took most of a day to do whatever it was doing, over a not-that-speedy connection.
So far it's told me a bunch of software isn't compatible, but I've been able to open all of them.
Still trying to find the classic Windows games like minesweeper, spider, and (klondike) solitaire!

Good luck with that. Our "dear" MS (as far as I can tell) erased those games from the internet pretty well. I searched, but perhaps someone can clue us in.
