I want to get away from a cable bill so I have a question for those of you who are knowledgeable on this. We get our local TV news from Atlanta tv stations 2, 5 or 11 but I can't seem to find a way to stream the news like Netflix or Amazon. I have looked for streaming option but apparently I don't know what to look for or it doesn't exist.
I have no use for anything on those channels except the news for weather and such but I have not been able to find any way to stream them live. It is safe to say that I despise those channels except for the local news. So how do I get the news without the cable?
Suggestions?
Options?
If you have AT&T, you can get Directv Now. We got it for $25 a month, and got an Apple TV device for free, if there's any thing free? We steam over the Apple TV device. Works great. Apple TV has added Amazon Prime this week.
Are you not able to receive them over the air with your own antenna??ÿ That's how we get the local stations.

The technology on antennas and boosters has improved over the years.
I would check with a few antenna supplies and see what they have to offer

Until a friend of mine just a few minutes ago informed me of using a Clear Stream antennae the thought of using one hadn't crossed my mind? I was truly clueless about them and had forgotten that they are still around.
We currently have all our cable and internet coming in through a phone line.
I am not sure about local news, but many programs are streamed on local affiliates of ABC, NBC, FOX, etc.
I have noticed a dramatic price increase in local cable prices over the past few years. I am paying more than double from about 5 years ago.
Perhaps "the" way to get news online is going to (and likely subscribing to) one's favorite news source (such as Fox, Wall Street Journal, whatever). I folks who do just that.
A good omni directional antenna in the attic (or preferably on the roof) would likely do a reasonable job if one isn't Too far from the stations.
Unfortunately, many of us "require" some form of internet for basic "life".... email, looking things up, etc.
Over the air stations went digital a few years back, you'd be surprised what all you can pick up with a good antenna. With the old TVs that don't have digital inputs you need an analogue converter box.
We have a fair-sized antenna bringing in 14 stations and we are in the middle of the boondocks.

Do you have constant problems with buffering? I tried DirecTV Now for about a month and it was atrocious, even with 120mbps cable internet and a top-of-the-line modem and router. It was horrible and when I did some searching online, I found that a LOT of people are having this problem. DirecTV Now recognizes that something is wrong on their end but then basically tells you "too bad".

This website will give you an idea of what may be available in your area. Keep in mind the channel number is not necessarily the actual channel number. Atlanta channel 2 transmits on 39, Channel 5 transmits on 27. They are both UHF which is important in buying an antenna. You will find very few if any that actually transmit below channel 7.
They also transmit subchannels like 2.1 is the primary ABC, 2.2 is Escape, and 2.3 is Laff. Some of the subchannels broadcast?ÿ lots of old shows.
Get a booster, it makes a difference.

I have a rooftop antenna, and ran cables to different rooms.?ÿ I get, I don't know, over 20 stations.?ÿ Some are in spanish and some are totally religious, but I get the major networks and some that play like classic reruns.?ÿ I bought a DVR that works with the antenna (not a cable product).?ÿ I can record local shows or news shows.?ÿ It is amazing how many stations I can get some from nearly 200 miles away.
(I also have internet, and a router, and got roku, so I can also stream movies and the like, but that's a different matter).

The only TV I watch is sports, and mostly hockey.?ÿ Football is broadcast on non-pay stations for the most part.?ÿ I don't think there is a way to get the local hockey games without paying for cable.?ÿ That's my big problem.
Over the air broadcast stations are amazing. Almost every channels is broken down into 4 segments. Let us assume you get over the air Channel 3 (Major Network). You will in fact may see 3.1 HiDef, 3.2 not Hi.Def, 3.3 constant news, 3.4 constant weather, maybe constant cooking, but always ore than just one signal. Over the air PBS stations may add to their stream an out of range PBS station and/or a retro TV station. Then there are all the foreign language channels. We had an digital antenna for years until I got a really good 3 year contract for, cable, internet and phone. That contract is now done and the cost is sneaking up. One of these days I will put my old digital antenna back up and if the station variety has improved I will upgrade to a higher quality antenna.
When I mean improved is I am waiting for New York broadcast TV to switch to the new World Trade Center antenna. Early 2018 is the promised start up date for FOX, currently only Telomundo (Spanish) is on their tower. The increased height should keep our signal reception cleaner and stronger. ABC Philly also has a stronger signal these days.
It is very much line of sight, seven miles away, my son lives on a hill and the last time I took the antenna over there to test, there were 50+ stations from NY and Phila.

Cutting the cord is easy. Just don't watch television. Problem solved. It's an addiction. You get over it fairly quickly.
Check your TV model and see which USB stick it needs to connect to the web and that will get you into downloads thru wifi.
Hopefully you have what they call a Smart TV as it will be loaded with all the connectivity options needed.
About 5yrs ago I connected to a directional HD antenna and had over a dozen air channels.
Since that time, most have pointed their signal in another direction and reducing their signal so I am needing a longer range antenna. They are all at 65+mi away and coming from Louisiana at that, so none of the local news concerns my local area.

Works great. I've only have a 12.5 mbs connection.

Problem may have been solved. I just discovered that Sling offers Atlanta Channel 5 News.?ÿ
I did that 3 years ago. Got an omni directional antenna for 80 bucks that goes 125 miles, hooked up roku for a hundred and I'm done with cable/dish. I pull in 60 channels and can get free to $5 movie rentals through Vudu.?ÿ No more monthly bills and everything is HD.
Problem is solved. We have Channel 5 Atlanta news on SLING so tomorrow we are going to the AT&T store to cancel cable. Now I want just internet but if they try to hold me hostage and tell me that I have to get cable and internet I will just go to Comcast. I am tired of being held hostage by these people, NO MORE.
I'm fine with internet. Heck I have to have internet but I don't need cable tv anymore.
