The standard one-holer, while not as prevalent as in years past, is still a permanent fixture in many areas of our state. I maintain one myself at the Cash Clan's Hole-In-The-Wall hideout in NE Oklahoma County.

"Give Way 150 yds." indeed.

Had a guy in my county a couple years ago that the health department said he couldn't put a septic system in. So he built an outhouse. Health department took him to court. His defense was you can't prevent me from living on my property and the judge sided with him.

Some years ago, I was on a road project in S. GA. Some GDOT employee had labeled a structure on the highway plans as "Out House - Two Holer Standard No. BR-549". Those of us who ever had to use one are very thankful that the experiment called plumbing seems to have caught on. When my Granddaddy moved into the new house with plumbing, he stated he was going to take a bath every Saturday Night if he needed it or not.

If constructed properly, maintained...and possibly relocated every once in blue moon, a privy is a viable alternative to shaggin' your bottom over a log in a freezing drizzle.

My grandfather on my mother's side had running water in his kitchen, but no indoor toilet. He kept his union with the soil until he passed away in 1966. The one grand outhouse of his I remember was the Cadillac of crappers.

It was a two-holer with a concrete floor and a concrete ledge the toilet seats were perched upon. Complete with a locking door it also had an electric light. And there by all the mail order catalogues sat a blue enameled porcelain steel gasoline heater. Much like a Coleman lantern, but made for heat and not light. Although I do remember in the summer you took care of your business quickly because of the heat; I really don't remember the ambiance being that repugnant.

Had an outhouse for years on my little homestead. Just got a septic system in maybe ten years ago. Didn't have in my heart to tear it down so there it still stands, only now it stores yard tools instead of stools. Many a night I was treated to the Northern Lights on my way out there I wouldn't have known were active had I had indoor plumbing.
