Music legend Gregg Allman, whose bluesy vocals and soulful touch on the Hammond B-3 organ helped propel the Allman Brothers Band to superstardom and spawn Southern rock, died Saturday, a publicist said. He was 69.
Allman died Saturday at his home in Savannah, Georgia, publicist Ken Weinstein said.
We lost another Rock legend. RIP Gregg.
Andy
One of the all time greatest blues/ rock vocalists and songwriters, ever. And a damn fine B3 player to boot.
Rest In Peace.
One of my all time favorite vocalists and songwriter....have been an Allman Brothers fan since the late 60's.....RIP Brother...
Sad news. Still regularly listen to a number of their albums.
How long has it been since Duane left us? Probably just the bat of an eyelash in the eyes of eternity.
I'm thinking some peach cobbler may be appropriate this weekend.
Only two of the original members left....Dicky Betts and Jaimoe....Duane and Berry Oakley (bass player) died a year apart from motorcyle crashes...I believe Duane died in 1971...someone correct me if I'm wrong...I'm sure somebody will....
I've watched Greg and Duane practice in their garage right before they became the hottest band in Daytona Beach. They called themselves the "Almond Joy's". Use to play at "The Wreck", a real dump but a blast to visit.
Lord I was born a traveling man - Trying to make a living and doing the best I can...
But when it's time for leaving... I hope you'll understand....
To Cher or not to Cher. That is the question.

I was at the Super Dome for that ill fated event right after Gregg married Cher. Gregg was so drunk he couldn't even walk let alone sing. They got him off stage as Dickey Betts started picking on that red guitar. We had a grand time. Saw the Allman Brothers Band the first time at
Ladd Memorial Stadium Mobile, Alabama in 1972. Saw them 2 or 3 times after the Super Bowl event. They were good out doors band.

Some people I know smoked a LOT of pot listening to these guys in the '70's
Yeh, I know.....
Great Musician, songwriter lyricist and natural Blues singer.
Saw their 18 wheeler being unloaded at the Filmore East in 1970. Quite a site.
They would be recording live.
Duane knew how to record from his sideman days at Muscle Shoals.
When I settled in N'awlins, people loved the Allman Bros. and they lived them back. New Years Eve shows at the Warehouse and free shows at the City Park.
I don't know how new babies were named Melissa due to them.
They created Southern Rock and had a vital influence on changing Country music.
Here's a later song by Greg during the late 80s music video era.

In 1973 I went with a friend to Richard's, a bar on 10th Street in Atlanta to see a band who he knew the members of. I enjoyed the show and when they took a break the Allman Brothers came out on stage. They jammed for about an hour and then the house band came back and played with them. Great unexpected evening.
I also saw them with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker and Grindersitch in Atlanta Stadium in 1975. Another great outing.

Andy. I'm a fair bit younger than that but, Richard did a short stint running the instrument for me in the mid 90s (working out of sandy springs). A giant of a man; drove a limo to work, every day, and then stuffed himself inside of an S10 pickup.
I had no reason to doubt him but, I couldnt begin to
prove he was actually "that" Richard. I was too young to have known the club from that era.
He told some better-than-good stories. On the other hand, he sucked as an I-man... deaf in one ear and couldn't hear out of the other.
Don't recall any specific Allman tales he shared but, I'm sure he had a few. Hadn't thought about any of that in almost 20 years.

one time about 30 years ago (probably more like 26-27) i was standing in line in the texaco in cape canaveral, waiting to pay for the tank of gas i'd just put in the ranchero. some typical canaveral bum was in front of me in line- barefoot, hair down to his ass, smelled like a swimming pool full of cigarette butts, sixer of budweiser in his hand. guy pays, turns around to walk out, and it's gregg. hopped in his old corvette, pulled onto A1A, and rolled on down the road.
(he and gary stewart were good buds. growing up in the area, the music of those two was ambient virtually all the time. throw in some tom petty and john anderson and you could paint a pretty complete picture of florida culture in the late 70s/early 80s)
