That might be okay for mud-bogging out in the flat?ÿlands, but would be upside down before you got very far out here.

My two wheel drive Tundra got stuck last week.?ÿ MAYBE two inches of "clay" after a good rain.?ÿ It just sat on top and spun.?ÿ I got a fellow with a "Dooley" to give me a tug and I was out in no time.?ÿ I've never owned 4 wheel drive, but DANG just a little mud brought me to a halt.

4WD mainly allows you to get to worse spots to get stuck. ?ÿThe voice of ?ÿ(multiple) experience.

Some places a winch is better than 4WD. The worst is when you have to dig a hole, plant a post, and winch to the post, so you can repeat the process as many times as needed. It usually happens at the end of a long hot day.

I agree wholeheartedly.?ÿ If you think it costs a lot to get a 2x pickup plucked out of the mud, wait 'til you see where the crew FINALLY got the 4x stuck.?ÿ I paid a wrecker service so much once I believe it would have been cheaper to hire a Chinook helicopter to retrieve that damned truck.

But this (and probably HC's) case was here on the prairie.?ÿ Mountainous areas, logging?ÿtrails and country that has great elevation differences in short distances are a horse of another color entirely.

I parked a truck early one February morning on a trail along a fence in a flat field of 2" tall wheat that was just poking up through the crusty snow.?ÿ The temperature was about 10 degrees and the ground was frozen solid.?ÿ?ÿ By lunch time the temps were in the forties and?ÿthe day was warming nicely...and so was the gumbo snot under the tires.?ÿ?ÿI could barely walk without falling?ÿon my ass.?ÿ The truck did nothing but slip sideways and threaten the integrity of both the wheat and the fence.?ÿ?ÿ I called for backup and we walked out to catch a ride back to the office.

It re-froze that night and we got out there early the next morning and drove out pretty as you please. A lesson learned for sure.

I hear buddy!

The "beauty" of the Great Basin, is that not only do we have craggy peaks in the 13,000 ft. range, but also clays that resemble a cross between warm chocolate & baby sheeet. Oh yeah, and also salty alkali flats with 10,000+ feet deep wet snot that can?ÿ(and sometimes does) swallow?ÿvehicles (never to be seen again).

Fun and games!

The hardest thing to teach rookies is that it is not necessary to drive to the beginning setup.

You got feets for walking, so stop at the end of solid ground.

My rule is "engage 4WD when leaving the pavement".

20yrs ago I bottomed out my truck to the bumpers going down a county road.

That put a new perspective to my thinking about when to stop and get out and unload the ATV.

Back in the flatlands we didnt lock em in until we headed out. We had days here last winter you wouldn't make it to the office without 4wd.
