We all have magnetometers and use them.
I've dug my share of hot rocks, and not the kind the Rolling Stones used to play. But I don't think that I ever found a meteorite.
How about you guys? Any luck?
Find them all the time where I live. 😛 (see my profile)
yuk-yuk-yuk
Nearly Normal has the best tale about finding meteoroids.
I know someone who knows someone who knows an Eskimo. He has Polaroids.:-P
I have a few that are definitely made up of some iron content and looks like they were heated up. I need to find someplace to get them checked out.
When I was a little boy my dad found what you describe.
We took it to NC State University and they said it was not a meteorite
They were very interested and helpful.
Might be a long drive for you though. 🙂

Yeah, but he did not find a meteorite, a meteorite found him.
I've found arrowheads, gold nuggets , silver nuggets, Apache tears, mastodon bones, walrus ivory, meth labs, unexploded bombs, unopened bottles of vodka, license plates, and dead bodies, but I have yet to find a meteorite.

You may be looking for something a bit too large. Have you tried dragging a magnet through the dirt in some rural area well away from artificial debris? Take a look under magnification at what the magnet finds.
My father in-law found one on top of the snow one day on his farm. For some reason he took it to Clarkson University, they were going to study it and give it back. He's never seen it since.....
Ya, we did this as kids.
Dragged the magnet through the rain gutter since they washed off the roof.
Got a lot of them.
I found this on the snow out on a lake about 10 years ago. Looks and feels like a piece of slag. But what was it doing out on that lake on top of the snow? Very light, about 0.6 oz. and doesn't register on the metal detector. No tracks around it. Fairly fresh snow.
