In the borrow pit of the County Road today. The nearby landowner came over to see what I was up to. As we were chatting here comes two Deputy Dawgs up the road and take strategic positions on each side of us. Someone had called in a drunk driver in the ditch. I told them I hadn't had even a drink of water today, but I was in the ditch looking for property pins. Pretty soon a Highway Patrol car pulls up. Explained to all of them I was surveying. Since I hadn't done anything illegal I had a little fun with them. Who's, no sense of humor at all with those boys. They were pretty po'd there was no one there to cuff and stuff. ID'd me and checked my breath and finally left after harassing me for an hour.
I think I might start kneeling during the National Anthem.
I'm use to regularly drawing the county constabulary's attention. I'm sure every instance is a result of a phone call from a concerned citizen. On one hand I can appreciate how well folks in sparsely populated areas watch out for each other's interests. On the other hand I get a little tired of being "guilty of something" and having to convince a deputy otherwise.
Sometimes the investigating officer seems irritated with me or the fact I'm even out there. When I pointed out to one "not-so-easily-convinced" sheriff my truck was well marked with magnetic signs bearing the logo of the rural electric co-op he replied something along the lines of "people can pick up signs anywhere". I told him he had been watching too much TV.
One mentioned he was checking me out for a "suspicious" activity report. I had to ask what part of being legally parked in the R/W with cones and flashers seemed suspicious. One asked me how long I expected to be there...I told him "until I'm finished".
He also lacked any sense of humor. 😉
Once was grilled by an officer about whether I had a permit to drill a small hole in the sidewalk...took all I had that day to not laugh.

I (and my entire crew) was "detained" by the local police once for digging a hole in a recently overlaid asphalt road looking for a pin. The officer apparently felt it was approaching "destruction of public property". When I pointed out the city crew had done the same for a number of water valve boxes he re-thought his position.

:unamused:
Years ago my Dad and his crew all decided to grow a beard until they bagged a deer. They were in a residential area working when the cops show up. Someone called and reported some hippies roaming around. Dad shaved that night and never grew a beard again until in his late seventies.
This is why I wear blue, head to toe.
I work for a Fire Department, I take advantage of that, amazing, no one questions a fire fighter.
Me to reservoir maintenance worker, "I need to drive on the dam, could you unlock the gate?" Answer, sure let me get my keys. If I worked any other agency or private I would have to submit a blood sample and get a background check. It just so happened the dam was perfect to get a shot on a section corner I needed and I could include the control on the dam in my static network.

This is why I wear a survey vest when I'm out. That usually tells the neighborhood enough of the story.
O gads. This reminds me of a story. I work about a 40 mile radius of where I live. I had spent the day in the courthouse, pulling deeds and plats, I had done some field recon. I now needed to open the pavement. So... I stop by the hwy dpmt yard, and say "I've gotta open some pavement today. Could i have some cool mix?" NO! YOUR NOT GONNA OPEN SOME PAVEMENT!"
I said, call 501 569 2329, and ask r/w engineering.
20 mins later, i had my cool mix, in a 5 gallon bucket.
Turned out to be an old water valve access... And the recorded plat said "strong mag signal, in pavement".
We have to open pavement, sometimes.
