As I sit here watching the World Series I wonder, about - well anything but baseball...are these numbers realistic where you are? Not too many Surveyors make 100k in StL.

StL - Washington, DC?ÿ

100,000 in StL must make 148,000 in DC

StL - Houston

100,000 in StL must make 96,000 in Houston

StL - Portland, OR

100,000 in StL must make 137,000 in Portland

StL - LA

100,000 in StL must make 168,000 in Los Angeles, CA

StL - Anchorage, AK

100,000 in StL must make 140,000 in Anchorage

StL - New York City (Manhattan)

100,000 in StL must make 277,500 in Manhattan

StL - Tampa, FL

100,000 in StL must make 104,000 in Tampa

StL - OKC

100,000 in StL must make 97,000 in OKC

?ÿ

Per Google...Average Professional Land Surveyor Salary is...82,424

?ÿ

Info is based on just random Google searches....

Fascinating info.?ÿ Averages are funny things.?ÿ A lot depends on the size of the range making up the average.

What we spend is largely based on what we assume we will be able to spend.?ÿ That is directly tied to what we assume we will bring in after deductions.?ÿ Today, I can get by on far less than I had to 25 years ago.?ÿ No house payment.?ÿ No auto payment of any kind. No school-related expenses for offspring.?ÿ No fancy clothes or need to "impress" others.?ÿ Everything is paid for, except a couple major investments that could be rolled within a month or two into money in the bank.?ÿ The bottom line is that I have had to walk through the baptism by fire to get to the current status.?ÿ No plans to go back willingly.?ÿ It could happen, though.?ÿ One major medical event or accident and everything might need to be converted to attempt to cover for those massive expenses and loss of continuing income.?ÿ I thought for a time last Spring that the hard times were going to return.?ÿ That was when my wife was in the hospital, racking up all sorts of expenses, with three potential outcomes.?ÿ She might recover and be able to return to her job.?ÿ She could recover but be unable to return to her job.?ÿ She could die.?ÿ Fortunately, she did recover and has returned to work.?ÿ We have paid all the medical bills.?ÿ But, we realize that the damage she has experienced will shorten her work time.?ÿ Even with a nice retirement package, the decrease in disposable income will be substantial, especially once the increase in insurance expense skyrockets.

We all have to determine what we are willing to accept as adequate.?ÿ Sometimes we can do much better than that.?ÿ But, we need to plan for an acceptable future.?ÿ The day will come when the outgo will exceed the income unless we have done an exceptional job of creating a perpetual source of income that requires practically no effort.

No!

Those averages are much higher than surveyors make. Your St. Louis average for surveyors would probably be close to the Metro Atlanta market but not where I live.

As the Spelling Police found me already this morning it is only fair that I be the one to point out that no verses are involved in this thread.?ÿ Versus is the correct term to be used in the thread title.

Which reminds me of last weekend while at the volleyball tournament.?ÿ The goal was to send a simple text to my wife describing the talent of the front row players on the opposing team.?ÿ My series of texts read as follows:

?ÿ

They have too many very good spoilers and excellent setters.

Spiders.

Not spiders or spoilers.?ÿ Spiders.

Does not like those who spike in the game.

Otto correct sux.

.

.

.

The term spikers apparently was unknown to my non-volleyball conversant smarter-than-me-phone. ( I see this computer isn't too happy about it either.)

San Francisco is probably higher than Manhatten or at least the same.

We own our house so "rent" is not going up.

Unfortunately "renter" keep seeing their "rent" go up.

The cost of housing in PDX is certainly much higher than in OKC. Other things are probably about the same.?ÿ Except trips to the beach or the mountains. Much shorter trips when you live in PDX.

@norman-oklahoma

My experience is that everything is cheaper when I get away from the left coast from burgers to housing.

California has property tax control, proposition 13, so as long as you stay in your house, the property taxes only go up a little bit (max 2%) every year. When a house is sold, that triggers a re-assessment to the current price. Thus you'll see expensive houses that are held in family trusts so the re-assessment never gets done...also applies to commercial property.

I think that the numbers look right as far as what it would take in the different cities to be able to live the same lifestyle as you can on $100K in St. Louis.

Average incomes are what the market dictates... down here, at least in the metropolitan areas, if you're licensed and not making six figures you should probably be looking for a new job unless you're content with where you're at. Newly minted stamps might be the exception to that, but I had a buddy in Baton Rouge who was making $100K twenty years ago.

@lee-d

Well I’m not making 6 figures. If anyone wants to offer me a job for say 125-150 the PM works just fine ????

Six figures is not enough to live in Seattle

When I moved here, in 1990, from the Omaha NE area, my salary doubled. My rent in La Platte NE was $200 a month; my rent in Puyallup was $700. Everything else was pretty much the same: utilities, groceries, gas; not much different. And the temperate climate helped keep the utility bill down.

The traffic sucks, though...

All in all, it was a good move; I love the climate!?ÿ
