I've been working on getting some of the corners and control points that we found and observed last summer into the County Data Base lately, and came across this picture just now.

It is the Center ¼ of Section 33, T.3 S., T.4 W., SLB&M, and it probably dates back to about the 1870s or 80s (we're not really sure).

What I think is pretty cool (and pointed out to the crew that day), is the WAY the 'C' is fit over the '+' in such a way that it forms a '4' (at least to me it does).

Hence....C4 (up being North in the photo).

BTW, that is the top of a stone (about 12” x 8”) that is probably 18-24” long and solidly set in the ground, and exposed about 4”. This stone has been well known in the area for at least a 100 years, and ALMOST everybody has accepted it as the TRUE C¼ of said Section (but that's another story, for another time).

That's cool Loyal and I think the "4" was intentional, it's awfully hard to do that by accident!

hahaha....It is some, or almost everybody. Never is it "everybody"....

very cool....I like that with the "C" making up part of the "4" (whether intentional or not).

Thanks for posting the picture.
Tom

Edit:
>it's awfully hard to do that by accident!

I was thinking it would be harder to do on purpose. But I like thinking it was.

Ain't life grand? A nicely-shaped stone, upright and in excellent condition after 130-plus years with markings that can still be read. However, I think it is leaning 0.04' to the south from the original position.

Well, that's simple, put a new 'X' in it. That'll fix it.:-P

Makes you wanna set a stone.

A lot of chiseling to get my LS number on it though. I don't mean deface the existing; I mean select a stone, mark it and set it.

Loyal, Since everyone (ok, nearly everyone) is wondering the obvious, just how far off the true, legal, and one and only center of section is this potential "property corner"? 😉

And how many monuments have been set to "fix" the stone?;-)

Nice find. That's all I'm going to say about centers of sections. I can't deal with another year long debate on them. LOL

Come on man, that was a great time. EPIC!
Surely you can now find another situation that will take our attention away from the up coming election.

NOTICE: This is not intended as a political nor religious post!

No way Joe. I had an entire group that got together and TRIED to work me over on that one. It was a good solid fundemental question as it started out and it was fun but I don't have the heart to start another one. Well, maybe I do. We will see now that I'm back in the field again. You just never know what I might start.

You could go to a company that sells cemetery monuments and have them cut the numbers for you. Could be a really nice corner.

0/0/0...It AIN'T anywhere BUT the right place!

God himself might as well placed that sucker there.

That's my opinion anyway.

Others will of course have OTHER opinions (and some have already).

The C¼ saga was without a doubt THE most intriguing, thought provoking, and potentially educational LAND Surveying thread that I can remember on that board, or any other.

It certainly pointed out that there IS significant variances in the Cadastral philosophy embraced by different Land Surveyors, in different areas of the country. This is of course to be expected, in that different areas of the country have DIFFERENT Cadastral Systems, different case law, and even within the PLSS, there ARE many different possible scenarios that can pop up. IF the “Manual” actually contained a detailed discussion of EVERY possible scenario (just in the PLSS), it wouldn't fit inside Railroad Boxcar!

It is often said that there is NOTHING new under the Sun, and maybe that's true, I dunno. I do KNOW however, that NOBODY has encountered ALL of the possible (even even likely) scenarios, and it's threads like your C¼ saga that can really get folks THINKING.
