Funny memo.

Who do you actually think are the "trolls" over there?

The so called anonymous posters definitely provide better input and guidance then the ones I really consider the trolls. Have you ever noticed that the real trolls do not support their arguments with supporting citations or Manual references. Why is that?

Reading between the lines of some of the Bogus TheoryTM discussions over there I suspect that a few of folks pushing Keith's buttons are former or current BLM surveyors posting anonymously. Especially the ones who've referenced old surveys where he appeared to reject existing documentation based on the dreaded Bogus TheoryTM

the law of February 11, 1805: "the boundary lines, which shall not have been actually run and marked, shall be ascertained by RUNNING (MY EMPHASIS OF THE WORD "RUNNING") straight lines from the established corners to the opposite corresponding corners".

Lines run on the ground is the law, and we are required to find the lines RUN in our retracements.

When private surveyors under contract with the USFS butcher every section they enter by planting pin gardens at each and every 1/16 corner, discarding the decades established property lines set with transit and chain by good faith surveyors, they are not properly retracing the established boundaries.

I have known the BLM and USFS to follow this law for many years. I have heard of a few exceptions. The phenomenon of private surveyors planting pin gardens along section lines and quarter section lines is based on the false assumption that the BLM Manual requires it. It says no such thing, for retracements.

The PLSS is a system of monuments, first to be set, then for all of society to follow. When someone sets a new center 1/4 corner based on perfect GPS straight lines, the public laughs at us as a profession.

In the above post, I was trying to say that I have known the BLM and USFS to RETRACE previously established aliquot lines - NOT RECALCULATING EVERY CORNER - and I might not have adequately conveyed that!

Here's a 30 year old memo from the BLM..

...before the term "bogus" had been coined, no doubt.

Please note at the bottom to whom all questions should be directed. 😉

Amen. To establish a property line, a surveyor must be acting in good faith and attempting to subdivide the original survey in accordance with the applicable standards of the time, using the tools of the time.

From the very beginning, it was fundamentally understood by the Founding Fathers that no tools existed that guaranteed perfect measurements (no satelites, for one thing). The entire system was designed to mark the property corners on the ground "as near as may be".

Never, never, never has a property corner actually rested in some future surveyor's head. It has never been a theoretical contemplation, subject to change from head to head, new tool to new tool.

It was designed specifically for private individuals to settle in peace and order. All they needed was something to see on the ground.

Unfortunately, the number one disruptor of all that peace and order has been subsequent surveyors, thinking that it was their job to discard all local points of control and plant pin gardens at a better coordinate lying in their head.

We have the skills to detect fraud - and can cite that suspicion when we believe it has occurred and warrants rejection of an existing monument. But that's not why I see private surveyors butcher every section they enter.

The standard line at the bottom naming the person to contact usually indicates that person actually wrote the memo for the signature of the big shot who actually signed it, in goobermint practice.

Here's a 30 year old memo from the BLM..

It was well written for an administrative memo from a managerial section.
Except that #5 was extremely off the wall.
